MARTIAL ARTS SPIRIT | BOWING ETIQUETTE

A bow is not just a formality, it’s the first lesson.
It teaches respect, awareness, and presence.
At Shobukan Dojo, it marks the moment to leave distractions behind and train with focus and sincerity.
Before technique comes respect, that’s where martial arts begin.
And it’s a value that should be learned from an early age.

"STRENGTH
There are very skillful persons and less skillful persons. One who appears good and strong is not always good and strong. Even though one may be proud of one's techniques, their value is relative because one may face someone stronger than oneself. Therefore, one must rely on the spirit that resides in the depths of one's own technique.
Strength is developed by continual training. This permits one to acquire both mental patience and resistance, spiritual qualities that allow one to support and control one's own body. In other words, when mind and body work together, the effects will be multiplied and one's strength will be fully active. Here is an example. Draw a circle. Keep repeating the circle, drawing one on top of the others.
What happens? The mass of circles drawn looks like a sphere. A sphere is free to spin in any direction, while remaining stable and powerful.
Aikido depends not on innate skillfulness but on steady and continual training. Continual practice requires patience, which leads one to become strong in spiritual and physical resistance. Real strength will be acquired in cultivating the mental ability to control the body freely.”

“Brightness and Flexibility

The Founder Morihei was extremely sensitive. His philosophy was practical yet profound. Morihei's thoughts were not easy to follow; they had to be learned bit by bit. He never tried to explain everything all at once. He did not reject people because of their lack of understanding, nor force people to listen to him. All Morihei asked for was a real interest in Aikido. Such sincere people were welcomed with open arms.

Morihei frequently referred to Aikido as the "Dance of the Gods (Amakagura)." This dance, described in the Kojiki, was performed by Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto to lure the Sun Goddess out of her cave. It was a dance of liberation, brightness, and bliss. Like this, the goal of Aikido is to dispel all darkness.

I once heard this from the mother of an elementary school student studying
Aikido: "Since my son began practicing Aikido he has a much brighter outlook and plays better with his friends." Previously this child had few friends, and was rather sullen and gloomy. Of course, none of his Aikido instructors told him,
"Get a better attitude and make more friends." Little by little, the Aikido mindset influenced the child, and his situation improved. This is how the inner elements of brightness and joy are brought to the surface in Aikido.

The reason one starts to practice is not important. It can be for health or beauty, for fellowship, whatever. Regardless of the reason, the essence of Aikido does not change. In Aikido, we welcome the participation of women. Women who practice Aikido make society stronger and healthier.”

“Aikido as a Martial Art
Aikido is a system derived from the martial traditions of Japan. Martial arts that have preserved their traditions intact, as handed down from the past, are known as kobudo. Aikido, however, is not one of those kobudo. The founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, trained in many traditional martial art systems, and then developed Aikido, an entirely new system. Morihei took the best aspects of the old systems and created a martial art for the future, a modern Budo within the context of contemporary society.

There are other modern martial arts such as Judo, Kendo, and Karate-do, but these are all based on competition with sporting elements. Aikido, however, is free from organized competition, placing prime importance on individual spiritual development and social responsibility. Perhaps the most outstanding characteristic of Aikido is that it preserves the best aspects of the past within the framework of present social conditions to make it a pure, modern, universal Budo.”

“Ki, Mind, and Body as One
The Founder Morihei Ueshiba, who researched the concept of aiki (harmoniza-tion of ki) deeply, explained ki like this: "Ki is the vital energy of the universe, and the subtle functioning of ki enlivens the five senses. Employ that force, with unity of body and mind, and you can move freely as you will."
How can we employ the subtle functioning of ki? First of all, we need to learn how to use our breath power (kokyu-ryoku). In Aikido, ki is actualized through breath power. As mentioned previously, the Indian philosophical term prana means "breath." It was an understanding of that eternal truth—the nature of universal breath—that led to the enlightenment of the Founder Morihei.

The Founder realized that it was necessary to unify mind, body, and ki. From that individual integration, one had to link oneself to the universe as a whole, and manifest the tremendous power of the life force. Ultimately, that harmoniza-tion— between ki, mind, and body—will result in true enlightenment. This is the purpose of Aikido.”

“Techniques that embrace harmony
In Aikido movements, harmony is paramount. Therefore, according to natural principles, the movements flow without hindrance. From one single, well-defined movement, many other movements can be freely applied. Movements should flow freely and consecutively without stagnation. Practice free flowing natural movements, and the harmony between mind and body will be restored with an exhilarating sense of fulfillment.

Since Aikido is Budo, we must control opponents in an instant, firmly and securely, but the best way of doing that is to employ the force of attack to our advantage, using our movement to neutralize an aggressive act in a flexible manner. The more flexibility employed, the more effective the technique. Thus, in Aikido techniques, a pliant and flexible mind and body is essential.

In Aikido techniques, we avoid all direct confrontation with an attacking force, and that is the special characteristic of our art. From one good technique, unlimited variations are born. This is the reason practitioners are encouraged to have an open mind and a wide spectrum of experiences.”
