Blog #1: Why Every Journey Begins With Someone You Don't Know

When people imagine travelling, they usually picture the highlights: famous viewpoints, popular cafés or, in some cases, the small street that never appears on online maps but somehow becomes their favourite place in the city. What we rarely think about, however, is how we found those places in the first place.

Almost every memorable experience begins in the same way, especially when we decide to step away from the itinerary and explore something new. Someone points us in the right direction and more often, it is someone we have only just met. It could be a café owner recommending that you come back at sunset, another traveller who has been in the city a little longer than you, or a neighbour casually mentioning a market that does not appear in any guidebook. These conversations are easy to overlook, and yet they shape the way we experience new places.

When I moved to Hanoi, I didn't necessarily have a large network waiting for me. Like anyone starting over somewhere new, I had to build it one conversation at a time. Looking back, I realised that the people who also influenced my experience besides my friends were not really the ones I became closest to, but rather they were those who knew something I didn't. Each conversation made the city feel a little less foreign and a little more familiar.

That observation stayed with me long after Hanoi started feeling like home. It also changed the way I think about travel. We often assume that travelling is about reaching destinations, when in reality it is about reducing uncertainty. The more confident we feel navigating a new place, the more willing we are to explore beyond the obvious. Curiosity grows when uncertainty shrinks, and local knowledge has a remarkable way of doing exactly that.

That idea eventually became the foundation of MOVANA. On the surface, we are a mobility company. Today, someone might come to us looking for a bicycle or a scooter. As we grow, that may include motorbikes, cars and other ways of exploring a destination. The type of vehicle will evolve over time, but the purpose behind it will not. Transportation is simply the beginning of the conversation.

Our goal is to help people move confidently enough to discover places they might otherwise miss. Sometimes that starts with recommending the right route. Sometimes it is suggesting a quieter café, a scenic road or a neighbourhood worth exploring. The vehicle itself is simply a tool that gives people the freedom to follow their curiosity.

MOVANA exists for people who enjoy discovering unfamiliar places but appreciate having a local connection before setting off. We believe that every destination becomes easier to understand when someone who has already been there shares a little of what they have learned.

Because no matter where you travel, the most valuable map you will ever have is another person's experience.
