VANUATU FOOTBALL FAMILY SHOCKED BY THE LOSS OF KAISON MAKI

The Vanuatu football community is mourning the passing of respected football coach, mentor and former player Kaison Maki, who passed away early this morning after suffering a heart attack on Thursday afternoon at Korman. Born on 6 July 1978, Maki’s passing has deeply saddened football circles across the country, especially in Santo, where he first made his name as a talented midfielder and one of the region’s well-known footballers during his playing career.

Maki was admired for his football intelligence, leadership, technical ability and confidence in playing with both feet. Former teammates and supporters remember him as a strong presence in midfield, a player who could read the game well, control the tempo and inspire those around him through his performances and sportsmanship. While his ability on the field earned him respect, his greatest legacy became his dedication to developing young footballers.

Over the years, Maki served in several football development roles, helping nurture generations of young players through grassroots programs, youth academies and Vanuatu Football Federation initiatives. He spent many years mentoring players in the Northern Region and was widely recognised for identifying and developing emerging talent. At the time of his passing, he was looking after the Teouma Football Academy, where he continued to guide young footballers and share his experience.

Many players who went on to represent clubs, provinces and national teams were influenced by Maki’s coaching and mentorship. Colleagues describe him as a patient teacher, a passionate football servant and a role model who cared deeply about helping young people succeed both on and off the field.

Maki leaves behind his wife Esther and their three children, along with a football legacy built on service, leadership and youth development. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
