🌱 The Vanuatu Climate Mobility Training kicked off today in Port Vila!
Climate change is already reshaping life across Vanuatu - stronger storms, sea‑level rise, and coastal erosion are putting pressure on communities and increasing the risks of displacement. As these challenges grow, so does the need for practical skills, shared learning, and stronger coordination.
This week, government and community partners are coming together to build capacity on climate mobility and solutions. This training supports national and regional efforts to strengthen resilience and ensure people‑centred, culturally grounded approaches. Through interactive activities and shared learning, participants will explore how climate impacts shape mobility and affect communities across Vanuatu and the Pacific.🌺🌏
The training package has been developed under the regional Pacific Climate Change Migration and Human Security Programme Phase II (implemented by IOM, ESCAP, ILO, OHCHR, PDD, PIF and supported by NZMFAT). The three day training programme has so far been delivered in 5 Pacific Island countries.
In Vanuatu, it is supported by the Strengthening Resilience to Disaster and Displacement Risks Project and the Advancing Durable Solutions to Internal Displacement in Vanuatu Project, implemented in partnership with UNDP Pacific Office in Fiji.

🇻🇺🌋Building preparedness through community engagement across Ambae💪🏻🇻🇺
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), in collaboration with the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department (VMGD), conducted community awareness sessions and consultations across Ambae Island — reaching communities from the East, South, North, and West.
These sessions focused on improving understanding of volcanic and multi-hazard risks, strengthening early warning awareness, and listening to community perspectives to ensure that warning messages and preparedness measures are practical, accessible, and locally relevant.
Community consultations are a critical component of effective Early Warning Systems, ensuring that people are not only informed, but also actively engaged in preparedness and response efforts.
These activities are part of the Early Warning Systems (EWS) Scale-Up Project on Ambae, implemented by IOM in partnership with VMGD, with funding support from the Government of Japan Embassy of Japan in Vanuatu / 在バヌアツ日本国大使館.

🌋⛑️Enhancing safety around Manaro Vui Volcano through clear hazard zoning⛑️🌋
As part of efforts to strengthen Early Warning Systems on Ambae Island, the International Organization for Migration(IOM), in close collaboration with the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department (VMGD), supported the installation of volcano safety signages around Manaro Vui.
Three types of signages have been installed to clearly communicate risk levels and movement restrictions:
- Permanent Exclusion Zone – areas that must not be entered at any time
- Danger Zone A – areas that must not be entered when Zone A is declared closed
- Danger Zone B – areas that must not be entered when Zone B is declared closed
The signages provide clear, multilingual guidance to help communities and visitors understand volcanic hazards, comply with safety zones, and follow official alerts issued by VMGD. The installation was carried out with the strong support and participation of the local community in Ampang, whose involvement is essential to ensuring the effectiveness and sustainability of early warning measures.
This activity forms part of the Early Warning Systems (EWS) Scale-Up Project on Ambae, implemented by IOM in partnership with VMGD, with funding support from the Government of Japan Embassy of Japan in Vanuatu / 在バヌアツ日本国大使館.

🌱🏗️ Building Safer Spaces for Vanuatu’s Communities from Disaster 🏗️🌱
IOM Vanuatu, under the Project "Strengthening Resilience to Disasters and Displacement Risks" funded by the Government of Japan, has begun construction of Multi-Purpose Evacuation Centers (MPECs) across communities in Shefa and Sanma.
Site establishment is now underway, including land preparation, safety fencing, and the installation of project signboards. Once completed, these centers will provide safe and accessible spaces for families and communities during natural disasters and emergencies.
Beyond times of crisis, the MPECs will also serve as valuable community hubs, supporting local activities and strengthening resilience year-round.
