18/12/2017
Team Fiji Chef de Mission Wayne O’Connor credited all their athletes and officials for making the 2017 Pacific Mini Games a memorable one.
“We had a memorable time, we could not have asked for anything better and credit to all members of Team Fiji,” O’Connor said.
He said everything turned out well in terms of transportation, accommodation and meals.
O’Connor commended the Games Committee and all the people of Vanuatu for ensuring that their stay was a memorable one.
“We will go away with wonderful memories of the fantastic 2017 Vanuatu Pacific Mini Games.”
All he hoped for was for their sporting federations to continue developing their young athletes for the future.
“Despite experiencing some minor hiccups, I would say it was indeed a memorable Games for all the members of Team Fiji,” he said.
Team Fiji athletes enjoyed their time out yesterday and return today.

Netball has been the centre of attention during the second week of the Pacific Mini Games because it is a discipline that celebrates the strength and athleticism of women in sport.
This year, netball featured some outstanding athletes in the Van2017 games along with two dual national athletes from Vanuatu.
Meriel Kenni and Selina Solman are both Vanuatu National cricketers who have now made their debut in the National Netball team making them two of the few athletes from Vanuatu who are dual national sport representatives.
Both women, who are of Tannese descent, hold leadership roles in the two respective sports with Solman as the captain of the National Women’s cricket team and Kenni as the National Netball captain.
Kennihas led the netball team into this Games which has proven to be a challenge as they faced off against some of the more highly ranked netball teams in the Pacific.
Team Vanuatu lost all its matches but not without a fight and Kenni said that she could not be more proud of the team because all the women played to the best of their abilities.
“Vanuatu has never been this strong before in netball and it has been an honour to captain the girls who fought really well in every single game,” said Kenni.
Solman, understanding the pressures of being the captain was very supportive of Kenni and said that she is an outstanding captain and has enjoyed every moment of playing with the team under Kenni’s leadership.
Playing one sport discipline at the national level takes a large amount of skill and commitment but being a dual national player requires even greater skill, determination, commitment and maturity.
The Vanuatu national netball coach, Vanessa Laloyerunderlines the fact both women possess these characteristics.
“It’s wonderful to see them multitask the sport they play. They came on willing to learn and sponged everything in then took on the court with full might and that is something to be very proud of,” said Laloyer.
While both women are skilled in both disciplines, Kenni said that it is a blessing to be able to play two outstanding sports.
“It is a great honour to be trusted as an individual to play two different sport at the national level and playing with Selina is great because we understand each other’s game and we have a connection for both games.”
Solman and Kenni both spoke very highly of each other’s leadership and have both said that they are honoured to be dual nationals and are looking forward to what next year has in store for them be it in Cricket or Netball.

Beach Volleyball centre court at the Korman Complex was lit up on Friday afternoon witha couple of fun gameswhich featured the Vanuatu Para athletes, who have this past week competed in the 2017 Pacific Mini Games, and the beautiful mamas from the villages of Mele and Eratap on Efate.
These exhibition matches were a part of the Volley4Change program which is set on promoting inclusion not just in volleyball but in all other sports as well.
A group of shy Para-athletes entered the court to start off the first match but after a few passes, serves and laughs everyone came out of their shells and played fun volleyball.
As the game went on, both teams displayed talent and held long rallies which earned cheers of support and admiration from the crowd.
Jessica Richardson, the Sports Disability Inclusion Officer with VASANOC said that this exhibition match was about showcasing the opportunities available in beach volleyball for people with a disability.
“There are Para-volleyball competitions available and this is an avenue for Vanuatu Beach Volleyball and Vanuatu Paralympic Committee to explore,” said Richardson.
“It was all about having fun but also getting the message out that volleyball can be inclusive for all members of the community through their Volley4Change program.”
At the end of the match, everyone was all smiles and Richardson highlighted that all the Para-athletes who participated did not want to stop playing and are now talking about starting a Para-volleyball competition.
This match was never about winning but all about showing people that sport can be for everyone and a little bit of inclusion can go a long way.
The second match of the afternoon featured Mamas from the biggest village in Vanuatu, Mele, and Mamas from Eratap village.
Orange, Blue and Brown island dresses swayed on the courtas mamas from the two villages danced on the sand and moved for the ball.
All the ladies complimented each other with their different personalities on the court which made the match fun to watch but also very informative in spreading the message that volleyball is for everyone.
Eratap mamas won the match with two straight sets at the end of the program which showed that sport is indeed for everyone.
