Diving around Efate Island/Port Vila and out into the Northern Shepard Islands, blue water, lots of life and a heap of freediving with some amazing fish keeps the stoke high⦠spending time in the Islands with Local people, recharging by eating local kakai/food that has been lovingly prepared by our Island hosts, while resting up in some of the most picturesque tropical Islands keeps that stoke burning into the future as you look back with fond memories of an experience that gives a lot more than you might expect as you embark on a spearfishing adventure that may have just begun with the intention of diving with big fish and ticking off species from a listā¦

took this solid Uku/Green Jobfish on a recent four day guided trip where he and buddy arrived into Port Vila, Vanuatu the day after a cyclone had passed usā¦
Despite having flat conditions as the low pressure system pulled every cloud system away from Vanuatus waters, the resulting water was hot, milky and the fish were for the most part chilling in the cooler waters down deep, not interested in feeding.
After a couple of days of trying to make a chance on one of the many Green Jobfish that were a lot more active than the Dogtooth took this beautiful āJobbieā after lulling it into a false sense of security with some non interested/non threatening body language.
The whole team stoked on this one as we got stuck into some local kakai/island food paired with this top quality table fish!
Thanks boys for joining us for an adventure around the Northern Islands, with a heap of diving, good times and some laughs ššš¤

With a large cyclone pulling everything toward the East coast of Australia and buddy flew around the system and into an oddly hot ocean, as cloudless skies and a hot current raised the water temp by two degrees taking it back to summer tempsā¦
The result was a wide spread lack of current and hardly any cooler water to be found, even in the Islands further Northā¦
These conditions had the fish spread out and hanging down deep in the cooler cleaner water, not overly interested in feeding or moving around too muchā¦
We paid our dues as we put in the work, free-diving and setting up hot spot areas with some smell and action as we took reef fish for the table, gutting them in the water, adding scent and some commotion as the Red Bass and Uku/Green Job-fish compete for the bitsā¦
It was in the end though persistence and the use of the tide changes that began to deliver more close encounters that lead to ās new PB Dogtooth being put to sleep with a clean shot on this beautiful healthy fish!
Thanks boys for coming back for a second trip, itās always an experience having you two visit us for a heap of diving and some laughs ššš¤

Itās an epic journey to be living and supporting the family by doing what I love! To have so many great divers dropping in so that we can show them what we love about the Vanuatu Islands!
After devoting most of my year to setting up guests on their dream fish while letting go every opportunity that is presented my way. It was my wish to see in 2025 with a āproperā Dogtooth within the 40kg range.
Gifted with some epic weather conditions here is the fish that will have me happily shooting chum and diving along side all the big Dogs for the rest of this year whilst living through the stoke as guests realise their personal goals, be they for a perfect free-diving, hunting experience or a new PB!
Thank you to all the guests over the past four years! You guys are making the dream a reality ššš¤

*Story continued- After the early morning action and once our boatie had returned from the Islands surf smashed coast line and I regrouped and set a new driftā¦
Not in a hurry to take another dogtooth (unless it was a step up from the last, we drifted, taking drops to the many stages of stepped ledges that drop down to the deep blue as the current slowly moved us down the coastā¦
A good sized school of dogtooth followed us as we took drops, hanging outside of our dives slightly and taking a few passing looks at us as we one up, one down buddy dived our way passed schools of bait, surgeons and other small pelagic fishes, a short time into the drift I watched Francesco as another Dog made an aggressive line toward him, coming a lot closer than the first dog had, Francesco judged this second fish as bigger than the first and took a solid shot that had us both scrambling to secure the fish as sharks followed it upā¦
Another beautiful fish boated and an epic beginning to what was to become a magic run to the further north Shepard Islands!
The next morning we woke to a glassy ocean, with ground swell now dissipated, we made a quick run further north and into the pristine waters that greeted us with an endless stream of dogtooth encounters with every fish passing the forty kilo markā¦
As Francesco had already taken two amazing Dogs on the way up he decided to let go most every close opportunity, only letting the shaft go twice more over the next two days, the two fish that he chose were absolute drums and the struggle faced by most every visiting diver began to haunt Francesco, taking both shots from too greater distance both fish were lost! One hitting the spine without the power to break through the pe*******on was not enough to hold the fishes limped swim, the second having a similar outcome after its initial run managed to tear the slip tip from an angled shot toward the head!
It was in the end an epic seven day adventure with a lot of Islands explored and a heap of delicious Island kakai shared with beautiful local people as we camped our way through the whole trip!
Thank you Francesco for the good times and great buddy diving shared!

with one of the four dogtooth that he took during a seven day guided tripā¦
Straight to the northern Islands we set out with a variable forecast, the promise of settled conditions to come and high hopes for a big adventure!
The first couple of days had us working to get the fish interested in us as the currents were missing sections of the islands leaving us to dive pretty quiet milky water with all the signs of life but no Dogtooth in āfeed modeā, despite this Francesco managed to take two nice dogtooth for the camp that were enjoyed as sashimi and grilled together with local kakaiā¦
The third day was set for a big push to the far north with the prediction showing variable winds and small swell, the reality that morning was not as predicted, gusts to 15knots and a huge ground swell had me thinking into the plan on the way out, to the point of reaching the mid section of islands where I pulled the pin on the initial plan and instead set us up on a ledge away from the white washed water where the dogs congregate at timesā¦
First dive of that morning this was Francescoās first big dog of the trip and his new PB Dogtoothā¦
The fish was, after capturing some water images then painstakingly swum in through the swell by our dedicated boatie, my local brother from the Shepard Islands Yorick. Where it was given to the Island in what seemed like divine timing as there was a death in the community that required enough fish to feed the whole village!
Francesco was supper stoked with this beast of a fish and was reliving every moment of the dive together with us as we reset for another driftā¦
Story to be continued in the next post š¤

Itās been a whileā¦
Finishing out one of our busiest years of guided Spearfishing was full on! Thank you to all the divers who joined Yorick and I throughout the year 2024 it was definitely a year of non stop wild adventure and challenge!
It was my intention to put through a whole stream of posts from December through the new years period, however the December earthquake had other plans and instead we moved out of town and made an off grid camp where we are still living and working to upgrade little by little.
Here is a nice Dogtooth that I took after had finished his eight day dive mission with us, we had some of the Norfolk Island family visit us to celebrate a birthday and to spend some much needed time catching up again!
This fish was taken in a day that I took out jigging⦠I was diving the whole day telling him where the fish were, unfortunately they werenāt in āfeed modeā and he couldnāt get them to make a single strikeā¦
Afternoon last chance to take a fish for the celebrations I took the blue water setup and made a single drift passed a section of upwelling current where I often dive with schools of big fish, this dog along with six others were holding position up-current of the structureā¦
Taking my time letting two smaller fish pass me as I hung horizontally at 28 metres waiting for this Gus to pass me for a clean shot through the pectoral fin and out the opposite eye.
The shot broke clean and hit with an impact that immobilised the fish to the point where I actually dragged it up to the surface holding the end of the stainless shot line/cable⦠not until the slip-tip moved as I attempted to grab the fish did it even manage to kick off, working hard to finish off the fish I managed to keep it away from a couple of keen whalers that had followed the bleeding fish up with little interest in taking a bite, that was until the fish kicked back to life⦠it was though, too little too late for the fish as the blood loss from a shot that split the heart in half!
Easily winning the fish from the sharks it was back to the families accomodation to enjoy a week of family time and good food made with the freshest local dogtoothš¤

Iāve been lucky enough to have been blessed with the opportunity to guide divers from so many different countries and backgrounds, together with my NiVan brother Yorick we have shared not just the many and varied range of amazing ocean environments and fish life but we have also tried to share local culture, food and lifestyle in the hope that divers who dive with us leave Vanuatu with a lot more of a lasting experience than they expectedā¦
It has been an amazing experience and Iāve constantly been blown away by the fact that we have met so many like minded divers who are genuinely good ocean loving people!
āBertā is one of those unique and beautiful people who stands out by his own merit and genuine goodness! He has lived a lot of life and as such has a lot of stores to tell, luckily for us he is also very keen to let go of a yarn or three at any given momentā¦
Bert loves the ocean, has a deep felt respect for it and through this love he also creates dive gear that is made to last the test of time, an absolute attitude toward quality without compromise is what sets his creations apart from most, add to that unique design that is truly adaptable and open to interpretation of the individual diver who uses his creations and youāve got gear that exceeds itās original intended use!
Eight days of diving with Bert was full of great moments and he took a couple of great dogtooth as well as some other quality tropical species that we all enjoyed throughout the trip as we camped and traveled through the Islands where we encountered some huge fish and left with some great close encounter stories that Iām sure Bert will be reliving when ever the moment authenticity pulls him back to reminisce on his Vanuatu adventuresā¦
Thank you so much to Bert and his family for coming to Vanuatu and for the good times that we shared with you!
Keep an eye out here for some future posts where I will showcase some of Bertās creations like his flasher float that is so multipurpose and unique that itās going to need its own vices just to give a glimpse of an idea of the range of applications that it can lend itself toward!

Weapon of a diver takes a weapon of a fishā¦
During a recent seven day guided trip managed to take some beautiful Dogs, this āfish of a lifetimeā was his best for the week and his new PBā¦
Seven full days of deep diving isnāt an easy task to achieve, let alone when your forecast period turns out to be the most intensely strong weather that we have yet pushed through during a guided trip!
Seven days of 25-30 Knott winds paired with 3 metre swell had us limited to choosing the most sheltered Lee sections of water that hide behind the mountains and coast of Efate and its reachable Islandsā¦
Pushing through the surface conditions Luke and I buddied up watching each other as we made countless drops into the silent depths through out the week, working to bring the schools of dogtooth into our space Luke was patient as he let go of the opportunities on fish that were not the best available, waiting for the perfect presentation for an effective shot and chance at landing one of these overwhelmingly powerful fishā¦
Camping in the North we all soaked up the local culture as our Island families helped us recharge cooking our catch and pairing it with the nutritious local kakai (foods) that feed both body and soul⦠all of this helping us relax through their amazing hospitality that afforded us more hours of much needed sleep in the tents.
After a week full of great experiences, close encounters and some beautiful fish taken Lukeās humble attitude paired with his great work ethic alchemised into a perfect moment as this beast of a fish made an early morning pass on him as he lay motionless on the edge of a bommie at 20mā¦
Wasting no time in letting go of the shaft his shot was true and he battled the fish on the surface to win a certain level of stoke that only the most committed divers can understand!
So stoked for you brother!!! Yewww ššš¤
