Glasgow based artist Charles MacDonald—Outlandia AIR April 2024—has been working with infinitely reflecting materials and mechanical irises as a way of bringing the outside in. He explained to Nevis Radio how he is still at the "tinkering stage" of his idea, working within the confines of the Outlandia studio, but free from the pressure of definitive outcomes. Michelle Madsen and Elizabeth Margereson (Bait) AIR January 6-12 2023—'The Rewilding of Uncle Dad' is a work-in-progress performance project which asks questions about exploration, de-colonisation, patriarchy and pilgrimage. We came to Outlandia to explore a project which we started working on a year ago between Berlin and London, born from observation during the pandemic of the silent speed and grace with which nature took space when the human world stopped moving. We called it ‘The Rewilding of Uncle Dad’. This project brought up questions about how we relate to the exploration, de-colonisation, patriarchy and pilgrimage. In the face of the huge changes we observe and feel in the world around us, we ask ourselves how do we ‘re-wild’ the structures within us? What is ‘rewilding’? How do we apply this term to our inner landscapes? In our first explorations of this project, we played situationist games in urban environments, following the silent directions given by stone carvings of green men over doorways in Berlin, getting trapped in an alleyway outside the Cuban embassy, going on a drag bouffon quest for power and masculinity with cardboard biceps and socks for c***s around the City of London. At Outlandia, we asked if - by playing at being pilgrims and explorers of the natural world around us on this wild mountainside - we might be able to observe how our internal patriarchal structures emerge, what shapes they take, and what would happen if we turned them out to the elements to be transformed [...] We came back to our lives in London and Berlin with a wealth of material which we are taking time to work through - some of which will turn into a performance which will take the form of a pilgrimage in both urban and rural spaces in the next year, some of which will take us in a different direction - as a physical record of the slippery realities and fictions of our adventure. ’Approach to the Cabin.’
We found that the cabin was known to people in the area - visitors and locals alike. They were intrigued as to what was inside - within this unknown space fantastical and wonderful things could be imagined. The cabin had a dreamlike quality full of potential and imaginings.

I can take you. I’ve always wanted to see what’s inside, I’ve never seen it.
I know the way but getting inside is another matter.
I just haven’t been inside, but I know everything about it.

I imagine there’s water, running water, some way of cooking?
I imagine there’s a library of beautiful and unimaginable books inside.
I imagine there’s carvings carved by every passer by, every acolyte, every visitor.

They will line the walls inside.
Oh inside.
I imagine it’s unimaginable.
A place to step out of the cold, a spot to quell the madness.

It’s a steep hill, mind.
