What if you're training everything for your next race…except the thing that's eventually going to tell you to quit?

Your mind.

On this episode of the Run the Riot Podcast, I sit down with ultrarunner and clinical hypnotherapist Holly Grahn.

Holly recently finished her first 200-miler at the Divide 200, and what really interested me was how intentionally she trained her mind BEFORE she ever got to the starting line.

We talk about:
• Mental rehearsal and visualization
• Turning negative thoughts into useful ones
• Gratitude in the middle of suffering
• What to do when your brain starts telling you you're done
• Self-doubt and the belief that you're “not good enough”
• What hypnotherapy actually is
• And how Holly used all of this during nearly 200 miles of mountains, rain, exhaustion, and painful feet

There's also a hallucinated monkey wearing sunglasses somewhere in this story. :)

One thing Holly said really stuck with me:

“There’s more. There’s always more.”

That’s one of the reasons I love ultrarunning. We go out there thinking we’re discovering how far our bodies can go, and often discover something much bigger about ourselves.

There are comeback stories…and then there’s Patrick Yalon’s story.

In July 2024, Patrick went surfing in San Francisco.

A freak accident drove him headfirst into a sandbar.

He was left facedown in the water, unable to move.

His friend eventually found him, pulled him from the ocean, and performed CPR.

Patrick survived,but he was paralyzed.

After spinal surgery, rehab, and beginning the long process of learning to move again, Patrick developed a simple mantra:

“If I can stand, I can start.”

And somehow, just months later, he stood at the starting line of the Moab 240.

He made it 144 miles.
Then he went back.

Fifteen months after the accident, Patrick returned to Moab and finished all 240 miles through brutal rain, lightning, mud, pain, and exhaustion.

And the final 40 miles?

He ran them with John—the same friend who pulled him from the ocean and helped save his life!

Man, this conversation is about running…but it's really about so much more.

Gratitude.Faith.Purpose.Resilience.Second chances. And continuing to take another step when life looks completely different than you expected.

Patrick summed it up better than I could:

“If I can stand, I can start.”

The new Run the Riot Podcast with Patrick Yalon is out now on all platforms!

Some conversations stick with you long after the microphones are turned off.

This one did.

Marine veteran and leadership coach Jon Sheldon joined me to talk about something we don't discuss enough:

Every meaningful goal has a cost.

Whether you're training for your first marathon, chasing a 100-miler, building a business, or simply trying to become a better husband, wife, parent, or leader... you have to decide something before the hard days arrive.

What are you willing to pay?

In this episode we talk about:
• Why you should count the cost before chasing a goal.
• Why motivation starts the journey, but discipline carries you through.
• How to make good decisions when you're exhausted.
• What Marines and ultrarunners have in common.
• Why you need to decide who you'll be before adversity shows up.

One line from Jon really stuck with me:

"You don't rise to the occasion. You fall back to your code."

That's why we train.
That's why we prepare.
That's why mindset matters.

I'd love to hear what stood out to you after you listen.

Relentless beats talented.

Talent gets attention.
Relentless gets results.

In ultrarunning, talent might carry you through the early miles.
Relentless carries you when it’s hot, when it’s dark, when nobody’s watching.

It’s the decision to keep climbing.
To keep eating.
To keep moving forward when your body votes no.

Faith works the same way.

Anyone can believe when prayers are answered quickly.
Anyone can trust when the path is clear.

Relentless faith keeps walking when the outcome isn’t visible.
When the season is long.
When progress feels slow.

It’s not loud.
It’s not dramatic.
It’s steady.

Relentless forward progress.

On the trail.
In your work.
In your family.
In your walk with God.

Keep climbing.

Strong isn’t loud.

It doesn’t need to announce itself.
It doesn’t need validation.
It doesn’t post every grind session for approval.

Strong is quiet.

It wakes up early.
It trains when nobody is watching.
It sticks to the plan when motivation fades.

In ultrarunning...and life...the loud ones often fade.

The steady ones keep moving.

They don’t surge to impress.
They don’t panic when things hurt.
They don’t need to talk about how tough they are.

They just keep putting one foot in front of the other.

Life works the same way.

Real strength isn’t noise.
It’s consistency.
It’s restraint.
It’s discipline over drama.

If you’re building something real...
your fitness, your family, your faith, your business...

You don’t need to be loud.

You need to be steady.

Strong isn’t loud.

It lasts.

Not every mile feels epic.

Some feel heavy.
Some feel slow.
Some feel like you’re questioning why you signed up in the first place.

That’s the work.

Anybody can run when it’s exciting.
Anybody can push when the crowd is loud.

But the real growth happens in the quiet moments.

When you’ve been alone for hours and still have many miles to go.

When you’re sitting on a rock, breathing hard, and choosing to get back up.

You don’t have to love the suffering.

You just have to suffer well.

Train with discipline.
Recover with intention.
Show up again tomorrow.

That’s how endurance is built.

The body screams.
Your lungs burn.
Your legs lock up.
Every step feels heavier than the last.

The mind negotiates.
“Slow down.”
"Stop"
“Walk a little.”
“You’ve done enough.”

But that’s not where races are decided.

The will decides.
Not your comfort.
Not your mood.
Not the weather.

The will.

That quiet place inside you that says,
“Keep moving.”

You don’t build that at mile 80.
You reveal it.

Stay in the fight.
