YFC BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION — U16/U18 UPDATE

After a lot of thought, discussion, and careful consideration, we’ve made the difficult decision that YFC Basketball Association will not be fielding an official U16/U18 team this season at this point in time.

This wasn’t a decision we made lightly.

Over the past few seasons, we’ve seen numbers in this age group decline, and with other associations in the city now offering a U16 program, we recognize that there are more options available for players and families that have directly impacted our efforts to put a "league" in place.

Rather than try to force a program forward without the numbers needed to make it what we want it to be, we feel this is the right decision for YFC for this season.

But this is not necessarily goodbye.

We will continue to monitor interest and participation at these age levels and will absolutely revisit the possibility of bringing an official YFC U16/U18 program back in the future if the numbers and circumstances make sense.

To every player who has worn YFC across the years, every parent who drove to practices and games, every coach who gave their time, and every volunteer who helped make our programs possible.....thank you.

YFC Basketball has always been about more than wins and losses. It’s about giving kids a place to play, compete, grow, make friends, and fall in love with the game.

We’re incredibly grateful for everyone who has been part of that journey.

This is a pause.... not the end of the story.

Please see attached a message from Basketball New Brunswick regarding spring and summer programming:

All teams at any age division must be affiliated with a current Basketball New Brunswick Member Group and fully registered in RAMP. Basketball New Brunswick does not accept registrations from independent or standalone teams.

Only athletes born in 2015 or earlier are eligible to participate in Spring / Summer Competitive Basketball. Competitive basketball is defined as programming that includes travel teams, games played in other communities, tournaments, tryouts, and player selection or cuts.

YFC Elite Basketball – Important Message to Our Community

Basketball New Brunswick recently shared an important message with all member groups:

“We are losing officials at all levels. Without officials, we simply do not have games.”

This is not an isolated issue. Officials across the province are leaving the sport due to repeated verbal abuse, intimidation, and disrespect in our gyms, and this directly threatens the future of basketball.

As part of BNB’s response, every game is now required to have a designated Gym Supervisor present. This role is intended to support officials, coaches, scorekeepers, and volunteers, and to step in early when situations begin to escalate. Officials have been instructed not to officiate games where a supervisor is not present.

In addition, Basketball New Brunswick is now requiring all registered individuals — including parents/guardians, coaches, administrators, and host monitors; to complete a mandatory webinar on appropriate behavior and interactions with officials. Completion will be tracked, and groups that do not comply will be deemed ineligible for competition.

At YFC Elite, we fully support the goal behind these measures: protecting officials and creating a respectful, safe environment for everyone in the gym.

What this means at YFC Elite:

• Coaches and team managers are responsible for their benches and spectators
• The Gym Supervisor supports the game and intervenes when needed
• Parents and spectators are expected to model respectful behavior
• Players are expected to compete with integrity and sportsmanship

Moving forward, all YFC Elite families and athletes will be required to acknowledge and follow our Code of Conduct (which will be sent to you from your coaching staff). Any behavior that crosses the line may result in immediate removal from the gym and further consequences.

As BNB clearly stated:

“There needs to be zero tolerance for verbal abuse, intimidation, or confrontational behavior toward officials.”

We agree.

Officials are human. Emotions run high. Mistakes happen. Respect is non-negotiable.

Thank you to the referees who continue to show up for our athletes; you are valued, and YFC Elite is committed to doing our part to protect you.

OUR 2024–2025 U18 TEAMS ARE SET! 🏀🔥

After an extremely competitive tryout week, we are excited to officially announce the two YFC Elite U18 teams for the upcoming season:

💥 YFC ELITE – TEAM KRL (Coaches: Kavanaugh / Ramsay / Lyons)
💥 YFC ELITE – TEAM CO (Coaches: Carter / On)

Both teams are built on hard work, attitude, fundamentals, and commitment — and every athlete who earned a spot pushed themselves all week long. We are incredibly proud of the effort shown by everyone who attended tryouts.

Coaches will be reaching out to their teams this weekend to introduce themselves, provide first-week info, and get everyone ready for an amazing season.
