🥋 Dream, Plan and Action

What an incredible weekend!

We hosted karate college seminars featuring HDKI Sensei David Pope from Alabama and Sensei Nataliya Pidkovka from Tennessee, who came to the Boston area to share their knowledge with our college students.

We extend our gratitude to Sensei Pope and Nataliya for sharing their experiences about karate and life, as well as expressing interest in how our students are navigating the challenges of today's world, and we appreciate the transparent, honest, and fair process they facilitated.

We hosted three seminars at Harvard University, Wellesley College , and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where Sensei Pope administered a black belt test.
Congratulations to all 9 students for successfully passing their black belt examination!

Highlight #6: Nihon University Bond

Today we are highlighting the bond we formed with Nihon University’s Karate Club during our Japan visit, found on pages 37 through 39 of our Japan 2022 Karate Diplomacy Trip! We were able to train at Nihon University on the evening of our return to Tokyo. The training, led by Noriaki Sensei and Sakamoto Sensei, was based on Shotokan methods that we usually train in Boston. It was exciting to wrap up our trip with a training so similar to ours in style! At the end of practice, our two clubs did a kata exchange, having groups of students demonstrate their favorite kata to one another. This training was also a special moment for Vazrik Sensei, who reunited with Sakamoto Sensei after eight years.

After training, the Nihon University club and instructors invited our team to a farewell dinner at a local Izakaya restaurant. Beyond eating delicious specialties, students and instructors alike were able to learn more about each other, sharing interests and even exchanging music recommendations. At the end of the night, Vazrik Sensei gave an inspiring speech about Karate and altruism, sharing his vision to give back to the next generation of Karate students. Both teams then held a heartfelt gift exchange and ended the evening with ceremonial clapping led by Taoka Sensei, Noriaki Sensei, and Hashimoto Sensei.
We look forward to meeting again next year to train and meet new friends at Nihon University!

What a wonderful seminar by Vazrik Sensei today at the MIT T-club lounge! Our wonderful advanced belts got a dedicated black belt seminar to prepare us for the upcoming promotions. Everyone got to pick their tokui kata and got individualized attention and feedback from Vazrik. Of course, our beginner and intermediate belts got to experience the higher level kihon as well. Well done everyone!

Highlight #5: All-Day Karate Seminar with OIT

Today we are highlighting the team’s all-day Karate Seminar at Osaka Institute of Technology (OIT), found on pages 26 through 28 of our Japan 2022 Karate Diplomacy Trip!

On Wednesday, November 23, the OIT Karate Club hosted our team to train with outstanding instructors from Sh*to-ryu and Shotokan-ryu. With over 50 Karateka in attendance, we started the day with intensive sonoba and ido kihon to warm up. The instructors then split the students into four groups to learn Sh*to-ryu and Shotokan-ryu kata. Our team was excited to explore Sh*to-ryu, which we are less familiar with. In particular, learning the Sh*to-ryu version of our Shotokan-ryu Bassai Dai was really interesting! We got to draw parallels between the types of techniques favored in each style and learned to approach the kata in a new way.

After a delicious lunch, one of the instructors took the time to teach all the students the history of Karatedo and how it originated. Nobukawa Sensei also organized a special event: he invited World Champion Karateka Azuma Saeko to perform kata Chatanyara Kushanku. After this extraordinary performance, we all entered kumite training with a renewed appreciation for our martial art. Finally, the day ended with gift exchanges between all of the teams. Vazrik Sensei also gave a speech to emphasize the importance of our bond and our gratitude for this extraordinary event.

Highlight #4: Learning about Traditional Arts of Japan

Today we are excited to highlight the demonstrations shared with us at Osaka Institute of Technology (OIT), found on pages 21 and 22 of our Japan 2022 Karate Diplomacy Trip! The team got to view incredible demonstrations of three traditional arts of Japan: Kendo, calligraphy, and tea ceremony. First, we witnessed Kendo training, learning about their precise techniques and footwork. In particular, the team’s coach explained which areas of the body are targets in sparring and how best to position the body to deliver effective strikes. Some details were actually similar to Karate! Our team even got to try strikes with the practice swords.
Next, we split into two groups for calligraphy and a tea ceremony. The calligraphy students demonstrated their art at a large scale, then taught the team how to write the Kanji for “forever,” as a symbol of our long-lasting partnership with OIT. Meanwhile, the tea ceremony was a beautiful demonstration of the precise preparation of tea and the etiquette surrounding the experience.
We are so grateful to Inoue Sensei (President OIT), Okayama Sensei (Vice President OIT), and the various student clubs of OIT for organizing wonderful learning experiences for our team.

Highlight #3: Global Special Lecture at the Osaka Institute of Technology

Today we are highlighting the exciting Global Special Lecture at the Osaka Institute of Technology (OIT), found on pages 23 - 25 of our Japan 2022 Karate Diplomacy Trip! On Tuesday, November 22, 2022, Vazrik Sensei gave a special lecture at OIT to a crowd of more than 100 people, comprised of our Boston Karateka, OIT Karateka, students as well as faculty of OIT. He gave a lecture on his PhD work studying nanophysics and understanding heat flow at small length scales aimed at understanding and characterizing overheating of electronic devices. In this lecture, he also talked about his life journey and his Armenian background. He talked about the Armenian Genocide and the impact that has had on Armenians throughout the world and on his own personal experience. He ended with a discussion on altruism, gratitude, and how this can enable people to help each other and find true happiness in life.

We are grateful to Inoue Sensei (President OIT), Okayama Sensei (Vice President OIT), and the various faculty members of OIT for organizing this special event. Many of our Boston Karate students have only known Vazrik in a Karate gi, but on this day they saw him in a suit and tie talking about physics, Armenia, and altruism. Many of the students of OIT walked away with an increased motivation to balance academic studies and physical activity, which is something that is highly encouraged at OIT and this special lecture further emphasized that.
