See it.
Feel it.
Rehearse it.
Then perform it.
VISUALIZATION: SEE IT. FEEL IT. REHEARSE IT.
Visualization is more than simply âthinking positively.â
In psychology and sports science, mental imagery or motor imagery refers to mentally rehearsing an action, situation or performance without physically carrying it out.
A good athlete does not merely imagine winning.
The athlete imagines the entire performance processâthe venue, the sounds, the body position, breathing, attention, pressure, decision-making and the ability to return to the routine after a mistake.
What does Visualization mean in NLP?
In Neuro-Linguistic Programming, visualization is commonly used as a practical technique for creating an internal representation of a desired performance or outcome.
However, an important scientific distinction should be made.
Research supporting mental imagery and motor imagery should not automatically be presented as proof that NLP as a whole is scientifically established. A systematic review of NLP interventions found limited evidence and substantial methodological limitations.
Therefore, the strongest scientific explanation for visualization comes from research on motor imagery, motor learning, attention and performance, rather than from NLP theory alone.
What happens in the brain?
Mental imagery can recruit neural systems that overlap with those involved in perception and motor control. Research indicates that visual imagery uses neural mechanisms related to visual perception, while motor imagery engages regions involved in movement planning and control.
Recent neuroimaging research examining athletes suggests that motor imagery and action anticipation involve specific activation of motor and frontal brain regions.
This does not mean that the brain completely confuses imagination with reality.
Rather, imagined and actual actions share some neural processes. This overlap may help explain why structured mental rehearsal can contribute to learning and performance.
Why can Visualization work?
Imagine a rifle shooter preparing for a state-level competition.
The shooter mentally enters the range.
Other athletes are present.
There are spectators.
Officials are making announcements.
The shooter notices increased pressure.
Instead of imagining only a gold medal, the athlete rehearses the complete process:
breathing,
attention,
stable preparation,
the familiar technical routine,
remaining composed under pressure,
maintaining the trained follow-through,
and resetting before the next shot.
The athlete is not simply visualizing:
âI will win.â
The athlete is rehearsing:
âThis is how I will perform when pressure arrives.â
That is a much more useful form of visualization.
What does recent research suggest?
A 2025 systematic review and multilevel meta-analysis included 86 studies involving 3,593 athletes and found positive effects of imagery practice on several aspects of athletic performance. The analysis also suggested that combining imagery with additional psychological-skills training may be more effective than imagery alone.
However, visualization should not be treated as a magic formula. A 2023 systematic review found moderate positive effects for imagery, but those effects were not consistently stable when more rigorous sensitivity analyses were applied.
Current research also indicates that imagery can support motor learning, while the exact neurocognitive mechanisms behind imagined-action learning are still being investigated.
The practical formula
Instead of repeatedly telling yourself:
âI will win.â
try rehearsing:
Situation â Body â Breathing â Attention â Action â Pressure â Response â Reset â Next action.
This is process visualization.
And it is not limited to sport.
A student can visualize entering an examination hall.
A speaker can visualize standing before an audience.
A job candidate can mentally rehearse an interview.
An entrepreneur can rehearse an important meeting.
A performer can rehearse stepping onto the stage.
The key question is not only:
âWill I succeed?â
It is:
âHow will I think, feel and respond while performing successfully?â
Visualization does not magically create the future.
It gives the brain an opportunity to mentally rehearse the future performance.
See it.
Feel it.
Rehearse it.
Then perform it.

You feel the pressure, but you remain calm. Your breathing is controlled. You follow your trained routine. Your attention is focused on the target. After completing the shot, you maintain your trained follow-through. You do not judge the result immediately. You reset and prepare for the next shot. Tell yourself: âTrust the training.
