About
You may be wondering what is a soapbox challenge and why are Lanark Rugby Club and The Lanark Community Trust arranging one? We want to bring the community together, have fun and create memories of a fantastic day! Our vision is to make this an event that is almost as big as Lanimers! The Silver Bell Soapbox Challenge will be a fun, competitive and exciting day out for all! A Soapbox Car or Gravity Racer as they are sometimes known is a homemade, non-motorised vehicle that uses only gravity to move. Originally made from wooden soap crates, they are now made with anything from plywood, fiberglass, aluminium or even carbon fiber! As long as they can move down a hill you are in with a shout… Steering and breaks would be useful to! Soapbox racing first became popular in the USA in the early 1930s, when a man called Myron Scott arranged an impromptu race for local boys in his community. This proved to be rather popular and later that year he replicated the event, this time 362 kids entered with cars built from orange crates, sheet tin, wagon and baby buggy wheels.
