One thing worth calling out here: HYROX has been intentional about creating competitive spaces where ALL athletes can participate 👊

Not by lowering standards.

Not by using disability for motivation content.

But by building access into the structure of competition.

Giovanni and Nino weren’t here to inspire anyone.

They showed up as teammates. They trained. They competed. That distinction matters.

This is the standard the fitness industry should be moving toward 💪

The term “mental retardation” was removed from federal law in 2010 through Rosa’s Law and replaced was replaced with “intellectual disability.”

The word “retard” had become harmful. It was being used to demean and dehumanize. Families and self-advocates fought to change it.

Since recent public use of the word by members of the current administration, its usage has noticeably increased again.

When language resurfaces from leadership, it does not stay at the top. It becomes normalized.

We work everyday to build confidence, independence, strength, and belonging for a community that has historically been overlooked.

We are not going backwards. Dignity is not optional. Respect is not political. Inclusion is not negotiable.

Every week, I get some version of the same question:

“What certification do I need before I can work with individuals with disabilities?”

The answer surprises a lot of people.

There isn’t a special certification that suddenly makes someone qualified to serve this population.

What matters most is whether you know how to coach.

Can you teach movement?

Can you build trust?

Can you communicate effectively?

Can you meet someone where they are while still challenging them to improve?

Hi 👋 I’m Ryan. For the past 14 years, I’ve worked exclusively with individuals with disabilities, and I’ve learned that the disability community doesn’t need lower expectations.

It needs more coaches willing to learn.

That’s why I created the Inclusive Fitness FAQ.

It answers the questions I get asked most often by trainers, coaches, therapists, parents, and family members who want to help individuals with disabilities become stronger, healthier, and more independent.

❤️ Save this post if you’ve ever considered working with the disability community.
