Armchair Triathlete The armchair triathlete caters for the reluctant gym goer, sharing practical advice to make the most of your time exercising.

We've all done it, got to January, joined a gym with the best intentions and the aim to get that sports illustrated physique by the summer only to give up after we first fall off the wagon...it's easily done but where most healthy regimes fail is the goals are just too unrealistic. The Armchair Triathlete is for people who want to stop fad dieting and fitness regimes that just don't work. I will aim to provide practical advice based on my years of exercise in my own pursuit of maintaining a healthy and achievable lifestyle. I won't promise you abs or ripped pecks but I will stop you wasting your precious time and money on unnecessary fads. Being healthy should be fun otherwise you won't keep it up!...

In my previous post I talked about New Year resolutions, I touched on being realistic in setting your goals but I thought I'd dedicate an article specifically on goal setting. Whether you're using the New Year to launch a plan or just revisiting an existing goal, this time of year offers a natural time to pause and reflect. Having got to the ripe old age of 40 I like to think I've got pretty good at setting myself goals, however from time to time I get it wrong. [ 407 more words ]

It's that time of year, where every human being on the planet decides next year is the year to lose weight and be healthier! Recent coverage in the press shows that this generation of 40 somethings are the least active on record and that we're heading for obesity oblivion... It seems one of modern life's real contradictions that we are more health conscious than ever, veganism on the rise, Paleo diet this and Atkins that, yet we are getting fatter as a race. It's a thing! Prehab is the phenomena of anticipating common injuries before they happen, the old adage that prevention is better than cure. How is this done? Well the aim is all round strength and fitness, things go wrong when we neglect them, they get out of balance. A big factor in injury is the relative sedentary lifestyles we lead, most of us work in offices which involves long bouts of sitting. [ 379 more words ]

You wouldn't dream of driving a car with worn out tyres, or maybe you would but you know instinctively it's wrong. So why then do we persist on jogging in our 'old faithfuls'? Because they're comfy, blimmin expensive to replace or only three years old. I've heard these reasons plus many more. The same individuals will likely be complaining of injuries caused by running a few weeks later. [ 327 more words ]

Beats per minute, number of steps, amount of restful sleep and even when you should get up and move around. These days if you want to be told how and when to be active and when to rest then there's a gadget out there that can track it. The phenomena known as 'quantified self' has come about due to the increasing number of devices out there that can track, measure and analyse your every move. [ 377 more words ]
