Powerlifting and strength training can be incredibly good for you, yet so many people are afraid of it or intimidated by it. And I get it. Movements like squats, deadlifts, bench presses—and more explosive lifts like power cleans and the clean & jerk—can look complicated and intimidating when you’ve never been taught how to do them properly.
Technically, the clean & jerk and power clean are Olympic-style lifts rather than powerlifting movements, but they can be great additions to a well-rounded strength program. They help develop power, coordination, speed, balance, and total-body strength.
That’s why learning proper technique is so important. Start light, master the movement, and gradually build from there. If you’re unsure, work with a qualified professional who can break down each movement, correct your form, and help you progress safely.
Strength training isn’t just about lifting big weights or looking muscular. It can help build and maintain muscle, strengthen your bones, improve balance and stability, support your joints, and improve your overall cardiovascular and metabolic health.
And as we get older, strength and power become even more important. We naturally lose muscle, strength, and bone density with age. Training your body to stay strong and explosive can help you continue doing the things you love and maintain your independence later in life.
You don’t need to lift what the person next to you is lifting. Leave the ego at the door.
Learn the movements. Master your form. Start light. Add weight gradually. Stay consistent.
The goal isn’t simply to be strong in the gym—it’s to build a body that stays strong, capable, and resilient for life. 💪
