So I’ve decided to aim for 2022 to do my first powerlifting meeting. I turn 50 next year and think it will be a good goal. It’ll also give me time to work on the weak links I have. One being grip strength once I get over 400. Having recently sprained my right hand hasn’t helped, so today was done with wrist straps to protect the lift. I barely pulled 410 for a single last summer. So doing 405 for 3x3 today is a significant improvement. And shows just how much work I’ve put towards improving.

Client update: Jim doing kettlebell pause squats. We’ve had to work on Jim’s habit of really leaning forward, and doing a lot of flexion in the thoracic spine on squats. Here you can see that even though he still has a slight degree of flexion in his upper spine, his balance and posture are in a great position. Lots of work on plank movements and rows! He was in the middle of his set when I realized how great it was looking, so I grabbed my phone.
Sound is off because they were fixing a water main across the street, and it was LOUD.

Covid brought so many challenges. When the shutdown happened, like many trainers, I was stuck wondering what to do. But with a little initiative and persistence, gym workouts became in home workouts, FaceTime workouts, and even parking lot workouts. So whatever the goals, no matter the obstacles, we can get there together.

“How do I eat to get big?” - This is one of those questions you here over and over from young lifters. And it seems so simple right? “Just eat as much as you possible.” But is it really that easy?
For me, a classic “hard gainer”, the answer a giant NO. I’m not naturally a big eater, but I tried to cram food down my throat to the point of gagging, and I still couldn’t gain weight. So what’s the secret?
First, I would tell a beginner to figure out just how many calories you’re already taking in, and then just try to add another 300-500 calories a day. Stuffing your face everyday becomes really hard, especially when your body won’t necessarily respond right away. So start with a baseline amount of calories per day, and stick with it.
Step two, BE CONSISTENT. Stick with the extra calories until you start seeing progress, and then keep going. Bump the calories again when you feel ready, and then KEEP GOING. Weight gain is never easy, so be patient with yourself, and stay consistent. No supplements or anything else will be worth a dime if you aren’t getting enough calories. So get a real plan, and stick with it.
