WOW!

19,000 views later, one thing is clear:
We're not the only club having these conversations. I did not expect one post to resonate with so many people.

The response and support has been absolutely incredible. It’s shown us that rugby people everywhere are facing many of the same challenges and asking many of the same questions about the future of grassroots rugby. We just happened to vent our frustrations on a larger platform.

Clubs everywhere are navigating the same challenges: player numbers, finances, volunteers, changing lifestyles, and the reality of keeping grassroots rugby alive and thriving in the years to come....

What stood out most wasn't the agreement. It was the passion.

The good news?

There are still plenty of people willing to do the work. Players, coaches, old boys, old girls, volunteers, supporters, and rugby people from all over reminded us that there are still a lot of people who care deeply about community rugby.

At Akron Rugby, we're committed to creating a positive and lasting culture for everyone who wears our crest.

We understand that people sometimes choose to move on and explore other opportunities, and we genuinely respect those decisions. Every person's experience is different, and if former members share a different perspective, it's worth remembering that there are often circumstances and conversations that aren't visible to the broader community.

What matters most is how we move forward. We believe in treating one another with respect, supporting the rugby community as a whole, and focusing on the values that bring us together.

We're not interested in negativity, finger-pointing, or living in the past. We're focused on building a culture that will still be strong 50 years from now, one that future players, coaches, and supporters will be proud to be part of.

One built on showing up, rolling up your sleeves, supporting each other, and leaving the club a little better than you found it. Less looking over the fence and more investing in our own patch of grass. 🌱🏉

Let’s make it clear, we don’t have all the answers…but we know this, rugby grows when people get involved…. AND we show appreciation to those who are showing up repeatedly without question, rhyme, or reason.

In the coming weeks, we'll share some of our ideas on growing grassroots rugby, along with a few things that we are working on.

Thank you for the support, the conversations, and the reminders that we're not alone in this fight. The future of grassroots rugby is still worth building. 🏉

Let's keep the conversation going and, more importantly, keep building. 🏗

We wanted to take a moment to address a few things such as comments, concerns, and naysayers over this past season...

There’s an old saying that the grass is always greener on the other side.

Funny thing is, it’s usually greener where you water it. 🌱🏉

Rugby has changed. This isn’t the 1970s, 1990s, or even early 2000s anymore. The people who built Akron Rugby over the years gave us something worth being proud of, but honoring that history doesn’t mean pretending the game, players, families, finances, and demands on people’s time haven’t changed.

Grassroots rugby has had some tough and strange years. Especially this most recent year, Akron men and women's teams were not immune to it. Rugby clubs everywhere have been through some strange times recently.

Numbers fluctuate (we saw teams these past few seasons only traveling with 12 or 13 players), money gets tight (traveling 2 to 3 hours MULTIPLE times a single season is not currently financially feasible for a lot of people), seasons don’t always go to plan (starting with D2 & D3 and then having to make a devastating decision to drop a Division).

Then sometimes the shiny thing over the fence can look pretty tempting and through all of it, some people jumped over the fence or sat on it judging us and other clubs....

Others stayed and watered the grass.

They played. Coached. Recruited. Volunteered. Paid dues. Brought b**r and food to socials. Supported the club. And, most importantly, showed up.

There will always be voices from the bleachers telling everyone what the club is doing wrong. Players that leave telling us Akron isn't good enough for them and then mock us from where every they may land...

Constructive criticism is welcome. But if you see something that needs fixing, come help fix it.

Need players? Bring one.
Want a stronger culture? Build it.
Want better events? Help organize them.

Want Akron Rugby to succeed? Pick up the hose. 💦😉

Loyalty doesn’t mean believing everything is perfect. It means caring enough to help make it better.

So, to everyone who has stuck with Akron Rugby both on the men's and women's team and the Greater Akron Rugby Foundation through the good years and the difficult ones: thank you.

The best way to honor the people who built this club decades ago is to make sure there’s still a club worth talking about decades from now.

We’ll keep watering our grass. 💙💛🏉
