Photos from this evening’s David Watson Memorial event. Congratulations in particular to the winner, Dave Armbruster (6pts out of 7), and Mike Smyth (5/7) who won the David Watson trophy for best performance by a Morpeth or Alnwick player. Special thanks to the arbiter team of Lara Barnes, Paul Richardson and Irina Briggs. And also to Simon Watson for presenting the prizes on behalf of the Watson family at the end of the night. £165 raised for the Bay Foodbank and Cancer Research UK. This year's David Watson Memorial charity rapidplay will be held at 7.00-10.00pm on Wednesday 27 May at Morpeth RFC. The tournament is open to all Northumberland Chess Association members (as long as you are at least an ECF bronze member). Full details including links to the entry form and the list of entries available via the link below.

All games will be submitted for ECF rapidplay rating, so you need to have a current ECF Bronze (or higher) membership to take part - ECF membership details available here

CHANGE OF DATE TO THURSDAY 5th MARCH - It's the annual farmers vs students rugby match / drinks this coming Weds 4th March so we are having our chess club night on Thursday 5th March - we have tried playing on the same night before and it tends to have a deleterious effect on our playing standards.

CHARITY XMAS CHESS RAPIDPLAY TOURNAMENT FOR CLUB MEMBERS WEDS 17TH DECEMBER - We will be running an event for club members this week to raise money for the Braille Chess Association - 7pm start. After that, the next club night will be Weds 7th January 2026 after the Christmas break.

USUAL CHESS NIGHT CANCELLED ON WEDS 10th DECEMBER - The chess club will be in the downstairs committee room this week because of a funeral reception upstairs. With a league match and club championship games, there is no space for anybody else, so we will be back on Weds 17th.

Who says chess isn't a spectator sport? A crowd gather round the last game to finish last night at Morpeth Chess Club. David Simm for Morpeth has just played ...Qf1+ and is winning every which way apart from the clock. Unfortunately, it was the clock what won it a few moves later and so the game ended in defeat for David. But no matter, because it couldn't stop the Mighty Morpeth C from recording a 3-1 win vs Newcastle Uni C to go with the equally mighty Morpeth B's 2.5-1.5 win vs Gosforth Woodbines the same night.
