While we’re enjoying the warmer weather, we’ve still got the most rewarding winter sport on our mind✨❄️
Do you enjoy downhill skiing, but are looking for another way to get outside during the winter months? Then ski touring — whether in-resort or in the backcountry — may be for you!
Don’t know where to start? We know it’s still summertime, but it’s important to plan ahead. Here are some great resources to get you started:
- Get avalanche educated. Understanding snow science and backcountry safety practices are essential for recreating safely in avalanche terrain. There are several scholarships live *now* for the 2026-27 winter season. The Chicks on Cliffs x East Coast Avalanche Education Level One scholarship is still OPEN. Apply today using the link in our bio.
- Attend a Sherb Sunday with Chicks on Cliffs. Sherb Sundays, hosted on Mount Washington’s John Sherburne Trail, are intro-level, women-led tours that occur every other Sunday during the winter months. The tour ascends the Tuckerman Ravine Trail and descends the John Sherburne Trail, all while in low avalanche risk terrain.
- Go to a Gear Share. A great way to look for, or exchange, quality gear in a more affordable way. Not ready to commit? No worries — uphill rental gear is available at many ski resorts in New England, and there are several local ski shops that also offer rentals. Check out the “Resources” page on our website for more information.
