This video from is quite good in explaining what training zones/ranges are all about. It’s a tool for your coach to ensure that you are training at the right level he/she has planned for you.
The simplest of them all is the 3-zone model, with correlation to HR, RPE and breathing, is about the best you can get without spending time in the lab. 5, 6 and 7 might be more specific the closer you get to your specific event.

The Annual Training Plan is the tool used to layout a number processes to give a Birds Eye view of the cyclist’s “plan” for the year. It’s usually displayed in weekly totals, showing duration, training load for planned and actual. Testing, training focus areas, events and compliance to the plan can be viewed here. Each coach has their own way to plan for their athletes, some online and some in Excel (like the BaieSukkel Coach does).
Each person is unique, and so too is training and these plans.

During the planning phase, you would plan to do specific type of training. Known as , this is grouping blocks of specific training into smaller blocks aimed at specific focus on training. A macrocycle is a few mesocycles grouped together. A mesocycle (3/4 weeks) is a block of microcycles. A microcycle (7 days) is a block of sessions. And finally a session is the workout you do on a specific day.

One of the first steps when setting up a training plan, or even an individual session is a goal. The best way to ensure that it’s successful, it to use the SMARTer methodology, i.e. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound and then evaluated (to adjust the next session) and rewarded after achieving it.
