Three years ago, I started my journey in Method Feeder Fishing. I could never have imagined where this road would take me, how much I would learn, how many friendships I would make, or how deeply this sport would become part of my life.
Today, after three years of competing, I am incredibly humbled and grateful to be ranked 13th in South Africa. For me, this is about so much more than a number on a ranking list. When I look at the names on that list, I see some truly exceptional feeder anglers. People with incredible skill, experience, dedication and passion for this sport. To have my name among theirs is something I do not take for granted.
But no ranking is achieved alone. Every competition, every difficult session, every missed fish, every lesson learned, every piece of advice shared and every person who stood next to the water with me has played a part in this journey. A massive congratulations to every single angler who participated in the SA Championships and SA Open over the past three years. Whether your name appears near the top of the rankings or further down the list, you helped build this sport. Without every angler who entered, competed, travelled, shared knowledge and supported these events, none of this would have been possible.
That is what makes our feeder fishing community so special. It is competitive, yes - but behind the competition are friendships, laughter, stories, advice, encouragement and a shared love for fishing that brings people together. Along my journey, there have been so many anglers and organisations who have helped me, supported me, taught me and sometimes simply encouraged me to keep going.
There are honestly too many to mention, but I would like to thank a few who have made a special contribution along the way: Oom Gys, Oom Faan, Werner, Gilbert, Loutjie, Lukas, Trompie, Andre, AJ, Skippie, Martin, Glen-Eric, Oom Herbie, Freddy, Shahed, Eugene, Petrus, Oom Piet, Shiraz, JLC and many more. Thank you for the advice, the knowledge, the encouragement, the conversations on the bank and, most importantly, for being willing to share your experience with others.
And then, the biggest thank you of all goes to my beautiful wife and my children. Fishing sometimes means early mornings, long days, weekends away, travelling, preparation and countless hours beside the water. Behind every angler is often a family making sacrifices too. Thank you for always supporting me, believing in me and standing behind me through every competition — whether I came home smiling because everything went according to plan or wondering what on earth I had done wrong that day. You are the team behind the angler.
I am incredibly grateful for how far this journey has already taken me, but I also know that I still have so much to learn. That is perhaps one of the greatest things about fishing: The water will always have something new to teach you.
So here’s to the friendships made, the lessons learned, the fish that got away, the ones that fortunately didn't, the early mornings, the long drives, the victories, the disappointments and all the memories still waiting to be made.
Three years ago, I simply started Method Feeder Fishing. Today, I look back and realise that somewhere along the way, I became part of something much bigger than fishing. I became part of a community. And for that, I am truly blessed.
13th in South Africa — grateful, humbled and hungry to keep learning.
The journey continues…
