Does Your Karate Gi Really Fit You?

One of the most common mistakes martial artists make is wearing the wrong size gi. Many people simply continue buying the same size they’ve always worn, assume that one size fits all, or choose a larger size because they need the extra length. Unfortunately, that often results in a uniform that is far too baggy, hiding movement and making training less comfortable.

The reality is that there is no universal sizing standard for karate uniforms. A size from one manufacturer can be very different from the same size produced by another. Even uniforms sold according to height (160, 170, 180 cm, etc.) can vary considerably in width.

When choosing a gi, the most important measurement is not the length—it’s the width. Length can usually be adjusted relatively easily, but if the jacket, sleeves or trousers are too wide, the gi will never fit properly. Excess fabric not only feels cumbersome but can also hide the finer details of your technique.

That’s why we encourage students to measure a gi that already fits them well and compare those measurements to a manufacturer’s size chart, paying particular attention to the jacket width, trouser width and sleeve width—not just the height recommendation. Our websites size chart gives all the relevant measurements as well as a recommended size-to-height as a starting point.

Many people assume that customisation is expensive. While a fully bespoke gi, where panels are redesigned to suit an individual’s body shape, does require additional work and cost, adjusting the length of an appropriately sized uniform is relatively straightforward and usually only adds a small amount to the overall price.

At Bushido Martial Arts Supplies, we manufacture our own uniforms, which means we can produce many of our standard suits in the correct length for the wearer without the cost of a fully bespoke garment. The result is a gi that fits your build—not just your height.

A karate gi is something you’ll wear for hundreds of hours over many years. Taking the time to choose the correct fit is a small investment that pays dividends in comfort, appearance and the ability to perform your techniques without being hidden beneath excess fabric.

A karate gi should fit your body, not just your height.
