It's no secret that South Africa has a literacy crisis among many primary school pupils. Any effort to improve reading deserves praise. A group of runners in Alexandra Township, Johannesburg, started an initiative called "Read Alex" to encourage children in the area to read not only for school but also for fun. The programme has an annual Spelling Bee competition which is now in its fourth year. ~ Zikhona Tshona reports.
