Men’s Half Marathon Bronze: Qabavane Leads the Charge

Liyema Qabavane led the UFH men’s team to a bronze medal finish in the Half Marathon, placing 11th overall in a highly competitive field that included world-class athletes such as Stephen Mokoka. Qabavane’s strong run also earned him 7th place in the 21km USSA rankings, with only a dominant UJ contingent occupying the top six spots. His performance was instrumental in securing UFH’s place on the team podium.

Day 1 Highlights | UFH at USSA Athletics Championships

We’re still looking forward to seeing our athletes in action as we continue with Day 2, and Day 3 still to come. The energy remains high as UFH athletes aim to earn more points and climb the championship standings.

UFH Shines with Team Bronze and Standout Individual Performances

The University of Fort Hare (UFH) made a bold statement on Day 1 of the USSA Track & Field Championships, showcasing team strength and individual determination on the national stage.

Half Marathon Glory: UFH Men Claim Bronze

UFH earned a bronze medal in the Men’s Half Marathon team event, thanks to outstanding performances by Liyema Qabavane, Siyabulela Mnase, Lebogang Mmatong, and Thabang Mahlala. Their teamwork and endurance delivered a well-deserved podium finish.

On the women's side, the trio of Ikho James, Mbali Tube, and Aviwe Shude put in a solid effort to finish 4th in the Women’s Half Marathon team standings—just missing out on the medals but demonstrating grit and potential.

Track Events: Gaining Experience and Posting Solid Times

In the Men’s 400m (Heat B4), Tlale Mokati delivered a respectable performance with a time of 53.81 seconds.

In the 1500m, three UFH athletes took to the track:

Philasande Dlaba finished 11th in Heat A1 with 4:19.43.

Thabo Gwangwa placed 16th in the same heat, clocking 4:29.74.

Elihle Ncwazini ran in Heat A2, placing 15th with 4:30.68.

These results highlight the growth and potential in UFH’s middle-distance program.

Sprints and Jumps: Moments of Promise

In the 100m sprint, Avuyisa Piyo unfortunately recorded a DNF (Did Not Finish), but his participation signals UFH’s continued investment in sprint development.

In the Long Jump, Imi Tsewu impressed with a leap of 5.62 metres, showcasing solid technique and promising future potential.

Building Momentum

While not all results ended in medals, UFH’s Day 1 performance reflects steady progress and strong potential. With a bronze medal secured and more events ahead, the team remains focused and motivated for the days to come.
