Blood stocks are running low across South Africa. The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is appealing for new and regular donors to come forward, as collections are falling behind demand. SANBS needs around 3,500 units of blood every day to care for patients, from mothers facing complications in childbirth to cancer patients and people needing emergency surgery.

One donation can help save lives. If you are healthy and able to give, please find your nearest SANBS donor centre or mobile clinic and book a donation this week.

BEACH REPORT: Ballito's sea is in great shape. The latest Ballito UIP water sampling, taken on 13 October, found all 12 monitored beaches and tidal pools in the ideal range for E. coli, from Sheffield Beach and Tiffany's to Clarke Bay and Salmon Bay, plus the Salt Rock, Shaka's Rock, Thompson Bay and Hawkin's tidal pools.

Testing is done by B.N Kirk, an accredited independent laboratory, and funded by the Ballito UIP together with Zimbali, Seaton, Dunkirk and Simbithi Estates. Good news for anyone planning a swim this week.

Dashing by name, dashing by nature. In case you missed it in our September edition: Tomas Yoko spent a week trying to find fault with the Jetour Dashing Core and came up embarrassingly short. A 1.5 litre turbo with 115kW and 230Nm through a slick 6-speed dual clutch, twin 10.25 inch screens, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a full safety suite. Go see it, sit in it, and try to argue with it at Jetour Umhlanga, 15 Meridian Drive. Call 087 008 2002.

Beat the fuel price with CMH Suzuki Ballito

With 95 unleaded at R30.25 a litre inland, every kilometre counts. Suzuki has just proved how far its cars can stretch a tank.

At the 2026 Suzuki Fuel Economy Challenge in Pretoria, twenty media drivers, none of them professionals, took the Fronx, Swift, Baleno, Across and Dzire over a 120 km route through rain, power outages and heavy traffic. The results:

Fronx manual: 5.14 L/100 km, beating Suzuki's own claim of 5.5. That's a theoretical 720 km per tank at about R1.55 per km.
Swift manual: 5.03 L/100 km, the lowest figure of the day. Around 736 km per tank at roughly R1.52 per km.
Baleno manual: 5.54 L/100 km, within a whisker of its 5.4 claim. About 668 km per tank.

The Fronx, Swift and Baleno are all on the floor at CMH Suzuki Ballito. Pop in, take one for a test drive and see how far your rand can go on the North Coast.

WHAT'S THE ISSUE? Interim edition, by Tomas Yoko

What a week to be from Durban. On Friday, Clairwood's own Navi Pillay, 85, the lawyer who once defended Mandela, won the Nobel Peace Prize for a lifetime of insisting the law applies to everyone, powerful or not. By Sunday, her home town needed the army to keep the peace. Somewhere in Oslo, a committee is checking whether a prize can go to a person but not a postcode.

The violence aimed at foreign nationals in Durban and Soweto has led to 30 arrests across KZN and Gauteng. "A crime is a crime," says Minister Kubayi, which is the kind of sentence that shouldn't need a minister to say it.

Meanwhile in Washington, the man who wanted that prize says the committee demeaned it. Pillay joked she might share it with him if the crowd clapped a bit harder.

And the good news for motorists? November's petrol hike is now forecast at about R3.35 a litre instead of R4.70. Relief, South African style: being robbed slightly less.

Navi Pillay spent a lifetime proving justice has no borders. Let's not spend one weekend proving her wrong.

Art in the Country Coastal brought creativity to the North Coast this past week, with the inaugural festival at Collisheen Estate running 30 September to 4 October (the big public weekend was Friday 2nd through Sunday 4th). Around 60 artists showed their work under the marquees, organised by Kathy Jacob and sponsored by SPAR KZN and SPAR Gourmet Zimbali Oasis, with saxophonist Rene Tshiakanyi setting the mood.

Pictured: our good friend and artist Maryn Reimers with her friend Yolanda. Congratulations to everyone involved in a wonderful first outing - here's to many more.
