As we come off the back of our rebrand and celebrate a new chapter, this Heritage Day we also look back at our roots, our history and the people who helped us get here. 🇿🇦
Our story began in the late 1950s, when Peter Hulett started building a cricket pitch on his farm, Bogmore, with a scotch cart and two oxen. Local farmers and enthusiastic cricketers soon lent a hand, turning one man’s idea into a community effort that would help lay the foundations for Umhlali Country Club.
Established in 1961, the club grew through the generosity and hard work of its members and their families. They planted fairways, built facilities, organised fundraisers and brought people together through golf, bowls and tennis. Our first squash courts followed in 1970, and on 11 November 1979, the full 18-hole golf course opened, with Peter Matkovich helping bring that next chapter to life.
Behind every milestone were people giving their time, sharing their skills and building friendships. That spirit is an enduring part of our heritage, carried forward by generations of members, staff and families.
Today, as South Africa celebrates the cultures, traditions and stories that shape our nation, we honour our own small part in that story and everyone who continues to make Umhlali Country Club a place to belong.
Same roots. A brighter tomorrow. 💚
Happy Heritage Day from all of us at Umhlali Country Club!
