Osu Kyokushinkan dojos Bellville Petunia and Wesrcliff. We had an excellent session last night, but the pinnacle was Cobus Van Zyl becoming a part of our dojo. He holds a special significance for me because we trained together years ago at the same dojo. We are confident his path with us will embody the authentic spirit of Kyokushin. Masutatsu Oyama is recognized as the founder of Kyokushin and is widely known as a 10th Dan Black Belt. Throughout his life, Oyama dedicated himself to developing Kyokushin into one of the world's most respected full-contact karate styles. His reputation was built not on rank alone, but on decades of intense training, fighting experience, teaching, and spreading Kyokushin internationally.

A common question is, "Who graded Mas Oyama to 10th Dan?" Unlike lower black belt ranks that are awarded by instructors, the highest dan ranks in martial arts are often honorary recognitions. According to Kyokushin sources, Oyama's 10th Dan was recognized by the international Kyokushin organization and leadership as a reflection of his lifetime contribution and status as the founder of the style. In Kyokushin tradition, 10th Dan was considered a special rank associated with the founder himself.
