You have to believe that you are worth protecting.
You have to refuse to be a helpless victim
You have to be willing to stop a threat at all cost
You have to rely on yourself and not on other people to help you
Without that, all the techniques and weapons you have will not have any effect as you will not use them.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Think about your day job. Chances are youโre better at it than the average person. You know the shortcuts, the tricks that make life easier, and youโve learned how to handle things when they go wrong. Youโre a professional at what you do.
Now flip the perspective. Criminals treat violent crime as their fullโtime job. Just like you, they know the ins and outs, the patterns, the reactions, and the ways to get results. Theyโve practiced it far more than the average person ever will.
So if your plan is to โoutsmartโ them with a standard selfโdefense move you learned once in class, you may be in for a harsh reality check. Without understanding how they think and operate, youโre stepping into their world unprepared.
THE PROBLEM WITH SELF-DEFENSE ESCAPE TECHNIQUES
Self-defense escape techniques are often taught as structured responses to grabs, chokes, and holds. While they can provide options, itโs important to recognize that they are only options, not guaranteed solutions!
Several factors determine whether these techniques will actually work in real-world situations:
Attackerโs strength and size: A physically stronger opponent can overpower escape attempts.
Victimโs reaction time: The initial shock of being attacked often delays response.
Environment: Confined spaces, slippery surfaces, or crowded areas can limit effectiveness.
Memory under stress: High-pressure situations make it difficult to recall and execute complex movements.
Because of these variables, over-reliance on escape techniques is dangerous. They should never be seen as the ultimate answer to violence. Instead, they must be placed in context and used only when other strategies like avoidance, de-escalation, and injury inducing striking tactics are not possible.

PRETORIA - 26 September 2026.
I recently watched the Ultimate Self-Defense Championship on YouTube, where four women competed against each other in various scenarios. The competitors came from very different backgrounds: a professional MMA fighter, a black belt judo practitioner, a reality-based self-defense instructor, and a scientist with no prior training.
What stood out clearly was this: whenever the women tried to grapple or rely on escape techniques against grabs, holds, or chokes conducted by male attackers, they failed because the men were too strong for them. But every time they attacked those male attackers aggressively and drove forward with strikes, they managed to break free.
The eventual winner (the reality-based self-defense instructor) demonstrated this principle perfectly. Her success showed that aggression, continuous striking, and forward pressure give women the best chance of surviving an assault. It wasnโt about technique-heavy maneuvers; it was about overwhelming the attacker with decisive action and creating the opportunity to escape.
