A personal blog about my journey getting to the shores of Dover aiming to swim to France

18/08/2023

Just did my very last swim before I attempt my crossing next week.

What a journey…. One that would not have been possible without lots of people.

There will be some naming(and shaming) over the next few days 🤣

With just 5 days to go till we leave for the UK things are getting very very real…
The Brett Nerwich Swimming Fund has raised R53 000 which is going to go a very long way to help give children the opportunity to learn how to survive in the water. I cannot thank you enough to whoever has donated. Times are extremely challenging and I sincerely appreciate it.

Our goal is to get to R100 000 so if anyone still wants to donate you can do it via the link below or via banking details on the poster

Powerful words…

12 weeks to the day my English Channel swim window opens up …. Time to ramp up the mental training and put on my game face.

19/05/2023

Been a tough week of no training due to being a bit sick.
It’s at times like this that the ‘ I’m putting in the effort and training well ‘ thoughts need to squash the ‘ I’ve lost a week of swimming , I’m falling behind. How will I get back on track ‘ thoughts ….

The physical part is easy.
It’s the mental part that’s hard….

What a magical way to experience the sunrise.
Triple Robben Island completed wirh some vital learnings about my nutrition…

Tommorrow I attempt a triple Robben Island crossing. I’m unbelievably nervous but at the same time excited to put all the hours of staring at the dreaded ‘ black line ‘ to the test….an imperative test to see where my training is at.

I have breakfast and lunch packed and I got a WHOLE lot of Grit sauce with me to top it all off.

Craig : Coach I feel like doing some weights in the water today. What you got for me ….
Coach : 10 x 100m Medleys holding 1kg weights
Craigs arms & lungs : learn to shut up….

Holding weights while trying to swim is like changing a tyre with half the tools. It’s possible but bloody unpleasant.

Had a magical morning training in Durban this am and had the absolute privilege of having my son Zach paddling alongside me. Great prep for my double Robben Island attempt next week.
4 months and counting

And they say swimming is a lonely sport ….
