Absolutely incredible!!

A marlin from the beach!!

Andre Mellet @winchcastingbraid had an amazing catch off the beach yesterday catching a Marlin on spinning gear...read his story below.

"What started as a normal spinning session targeting big GTs at Rocktail Bay in the Kosi Bay area of Northern KZN turned into something I never expected.I was fishing fairly light to get maximum distance, running 35lb WINCH CAMO braid on a Shimano, with a 60lb WINCH CAMO braided leader and a 1-metre section of 1.3mm mono for a bit of stretch and abrasion resistance around the reef. On the end was a Chaos GT Ice Cream plug, worked hard over clean water. Conditions were spot-on — clean sea, very little swell, and perfect visibility. Then, out of nowhere, all hell broke loose. The lure got absolutely smashed and the fish took off straight into deeper water. The drag was set properly tight, but even so it still ripped 100 to 120 metres of line off in the first run. Almost immediately the fish came out the water, jumping and greyhounding — and that’s when I knew this was definitely not a GT. Proper Marlin behaviour.Luckily the fish was well hooked. The mono leader really helped with the shock from the jumps and sudden changes in direction. Once it started to slow down a bit, I had to lean on it properly, pulling as hard as I dared to keep it away from the reef. It was a fine line between giving it horns and not popping the braid.Against all odds, and on what’s basically GT spinning tackle, I managed to bring the fish under control and land it safely from the shore. Landing a young marlin on 35lb braid, off the rocks, is something I’ll never forget. I felt seriously privileged to be part of that moment. "

Everyone Hooked Up! Epic Tuna Fishing at Cape Point 🎣 #TunaFishing #CapePoint 25/12/2025

We headed out to Cape Point, South Africa and experienced an epic tuna fishing session where everyone on board managed to hook up! 🎣

Fishing aboard the Waterbok, operated by Cape Marine Adventures, we were treated to incredible offshore action with powerful tuna fights and screaming reels. By the end of the trip we landed 2 Yellowfin Tuna and 1 Longfin Tuna, making it one unforgettable day at sea.

Cape Point is famous for its world-class tuna fishing, and this trip showed exactly why. From solid hookups to intense battles, this is the kind of offshore fishing every angler hopes for.

If you enjoy tuna fishing, offshore boat fishing, and real fishing action from South Africa, make sure to subscribe for more saltwater fishing adventures.

Thanks to cape marine adventures for an epic day!

A glimmer of hope for a species that I didn't even realise had become locally extinct!

So amazing to see how the 2 currents meet in the mouth. A worthwhile watch🙂

I had a great sighting of approximately 5 Heaviside's Dolphin at the leopard statue close to Hout Bay today.

Fun Facts:

🐬 They are the smallest dolphin in Southern Africa measuring only 1.7m and weighing 40kg!

🐬 They only occur from Cape Point to Southern Angola.

While watching these special mammals my guests asked me why dolphins jump out of the water? Great question! Here is what I found:

Dolphins jump out of the water for a number of reasons including speed and energy conservation, as air offers less resistance than water; communication and social interaction, using leaps and splashes to signal to other dolphins; navigation and observation, to get a better view of their surroundings, locate prey or predators, and stay oriented; parasite removal, using the force of the jump to dislodge skin parasites; and for pure play and enjoyment, displaying their agility and exuberance
