I haven't posted for a while, so it's time for an update!
It's been a wonderful year for our bees Our hives are happy and healthy and the hot sunny summer weather with intermittent rains meant our little ladies have produced a bumper harvest of delicious honey.
As this cold, wet winter weather sets in we now won't be harvesting again until late spring - leaving the remaining honey reserves in the hives to feed the bees.
But lucky for us, the summer harvest is golden. We only sell raw, filtered honey - delicious, healthy and local. To order, please just whatsapp us on 082 824 0548

Happy Bee New Year!๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ
Beekeepers each have their own ways of marking the beginning of each yearโ€™s bee season, and for many, including me, the Bee New Year starts after the winter solstice. In the southern hemisphere, bee colonies are at their smallest in June when our days are shortest, but as the daylight hours slowly increase, brood-rearing will begin again. Nothing dramatic happens โ€“ this is simply the cycle of life in a bee colony.

The worker bees begin to raise the temperature of the brood nest. These warmer conditions stimulate the Queen to lay eggsโ€”just a few at first, but more and more as time goes on. And keeping the colony warmer requires more food โ€ฆ just when food reserves in the Cape are low! For this reason, many beekeepers like to check on their bees on the first warmish day after the solstice, and give the colony a boost of sugar water, pollen patties or both. After all, brood-rearing requires well-fed nurse bees, and if thereโ€™s insufficient forage in our gardens and fields for the worker bees to find and bring back to the hives, theyโ€™re going to need a bit of help!

We also need to check that our brood boxes have enough space for the Queen to lay new brood. This means checking each of the frames (there are usually 10 or 11 in a brood box), and removing the โ€œworstโ€ two frames, replacing them with new waxed sheets ready for the Queen to lay her eggs. Creating this space is essential. If the brood box is already full of honey, the Queen wonโ€™t lay!

Every beekeeping situation is different. Thereโ€™s no set formula to follow. But itโ€™s important to remember that changes are taking place inside the hives, and itโ€™s our job to assess the situation and decide whether something needs to be done. The next six months until the summer solstice will be a time of growing, then things will slow down again. A reproductive phase as the Queen lays brood and grows the size of the colony, followed by a productive phase when we can harvest honey, then the total slow-down as we go back into winter.

And if youโ€™re reading this in the northern hemisphere, the bee year phases are the same, just in reverse.

With rolling fields vibrant with beautiful canola flowers, and dirt roads lined with flaming aloes, our Breede River bees are BUSY, happy, and just a little bit feisty when we inspect their hives! Itโ€™s looking good for a wonderful winter honey ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿฏ

๐Ÿ Isn't this just beautiful! The photo was taken by the owner of the hive. The beekeeper forgot to put the frames into the hive, and the bees built their own architecture from the honeycomb, which takes into account natural ventilation, so that the air can flow freely and maintain a stable temperature. Bees really are at the heart of nature! ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ

The Accidental Beekeeper has just enjoyed a sublime weekend at the Breede River, chilling and checking our hives. The past couple of months have been tough foraging for our girls, so we supplement their diet a little to help keep the colonies strong until they have sufficient natural food sources again.
And itโ€™s looking good for a wonderful winter harvest from the abundance of aloes already beginning to bloom.
Soon the vibrant orange aloes will be joined by expansive carpets of yellow as canola fields around us blossom.
Watch this space for updates on our Breede River Valley bees and our winter harvest honey!!
