For our animal lovers we have a special Elephant Safari 🐘.

This is your safari if you are not going to the Kruger Park or if you want to plan extra (malaria-free) safari days in the south. As the name suggests, the Addo Elephant Park is best known for the many elephants, but with a bit of luck you can also spot the other animals of the Big Five. With your rental car you drive through the park and search the bush for lions and grazing buffalo. At the water holes you can see zebras drinking or elephants bathing. You sleep in one of the small guesthouses with a swimming pool, just outside the park. With this building block you have time for one full safari day in Addo Park. If you want to spot wildlife for a day longer, we will plan an extra night for you.

South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is the southernmost country in Africa. With over 59 million people, it is the world's 24th-most populous nation and covers an area of 1,221,037 square kilometres (471,445 square miles). South Africa has three capital cities: executive Pretoria, judicial Bloemfontein and legislative Cape Town. The largest city is Johannesburg. About 80% of South Africans are of Black African ancestry,divided among a variety of ethnic groups speaking different African languages.The remaining population consists of Africa's largest communities of European, Asian, and multiracial ancestry.

South Africa has beautiful nature.
Today we will talk about our journey to South Africa last year:

The beautiful journey has started in Amsterdam. We went to South Africa with the family. It was very exciting for the children to fly that far. From the airport in South Africa we were taken to the hotel by taxi. In the taxi we already saw some beautiful things of nature.

The rest of the week we were taken by bus. We have seen many beautiful things from South Africa.

We have done many things such as: exciting safaris, visited beautiful wine farms, walked the garden route, visited the Drakensberg and spotted wildlife in the Kruger National Park.

On todays blog we will talk about apartheid and Nelson Mandela. He was one of the most famous South Africans.

Apartheid or apartness was a system against non-black citizens in South Africa. When the National party became leader in 1948, they started racial segregation. In 1950 the government made differences between Black, mixed, white and Asians. The black citizens in South Africa were forced to live in separated villages and they were not allowed to share public facilities with whites.

From the start there was some opposition to these rules but the government prosecuted people that protested. The most famous protester against apartheid was Nelson Mandela.

In 1961 Mandela organized a national strike and for these actions he was brought to court and he had to serve a life sentence in prison. The prison was located on Robben Island this is a famous tourist sight of South Africa.

After spending some time in prison there came international pressure to release Nelson Mandela. Frederik Willem de Klerk was leader of South Africa at that time and freed Nelson Mandela on 11 February 1990.
Mandela also negotiated with De Klerk for a democratic election this finally happened in 1994 and Nelson Mandela was elected as the first black president of South Africa.

During his presidency Mandela did various things for blacks and the economy to ensure a bright future. He retired in 1999 to make time for his charity foundation. He died in 2013 at the age of 95.

Nelson Mandela made the world a better place and his legacy lives on.
