A race that requires more than strength alone - what does it take to summit ?

Mentally prepare for a hard ride. The route is challenging both physically, technically and emotionally with the Galgeberg looming over you for most of the race.

Leading up to the day, my training focused on quality over quantity - dialling in the basics - like good sleep and also doing prescribed sessions on climbs such as the Mast in Tokai that emulated Galgeberg.
If you can practice technical gravel bike handling - that is a big plus!

The second aid station is a make-or-break moment for a lot of riders. You ride past your car and come face to face with the mighty Galgeberg. The thought I had at this point was: “That is FAR and HIGH. Anything can happen.”
In previous years I had started in 2nd place and ended up finishing 7th so I was cautious not to celebrate too early. Focus on your own effort and make sure you can still max out on the last 2km tar section of the route.

In any race - focus on what you can control - dial in nutrition (I used Cadence nutrition and did 70g CHO per hr in the form of mix and gels). I was honoured to race my brand new bike (50mm tires, no question!) and aero kit for this weekend.

Finally, the Gallows is a real community event. Stay with friends and make the weekend about MORE than just the race! I was lucky to share the weekend with some special humans who honestly made it all the more memorable.
