‘The Burning Man’ by esteemed local artist Anton Smit can be found in the Bridgewater precinct near the entrance to Gusto Urban Italian.
This large-scale sculpture is part of the Century City Art Trail which all are welcome to enjoy free of charge.
“How to portray this burning
feeling within me to be more, to
do more?
I created this larger than life size
figure and covered it in flames –
This waving funeral pyre, this
mountain of burning light of
dream and revolt, an amalgam
of clamour and lament. Man
consumed by flames. This the
final answer:
To live is to burn oneself up
again and again.”
- Anton Smit

10 YEARS OF Century City parkrun
What a celebration! On our 10th birthday we were:
1. The highest attended parkrun in South Africa 👏
2. The 3rd highest attended parkrun in the WORLD on Saturday 🙌
Here are some crazy numbers from the last 10 years:
- 409 parkrun events hosted
- 42 679 total finishers
- 1 818 volunteers
And because every parkrun is 5km, the total distance covered over 10 years was 213 395km 😱. That’s enough distance to:
- Travel around the Earth more than 5 TIMES
- Fly from Cape Town to London and back around 11 TIMES
- Drive from Cape Town to Johannesburg nearly 152 TIMES
- Travel over halfway to the Moon
From first timers to PB chasers, walkers, volunteers, runners and visitors from around the world, every single person helped create this incredible milestone 💜
Thank you for making Century City parkrun what it is today. Here’s to the next 10 years!
