MYTH: Donating eggs will negatively affect my fertility, “stealing” eggs from my supply and stopping me from having children one day.

FACT: Donating eggs does not take eggs from your future supply, only the ones that are already ready, and about to go to waste. The average female is born with about 500 000 eggs and each month between four and 13 of these are released. These are the eggs that are extracted during the donation process, leaving your future eggs right where they are inside you, ready to be released in your future cycles.

As for the process of egg donation negatively impacting your fertility–it is unlikely in the extreme. In fact, donors are cautioned to take measures against falling pregnant whilst on a donation cycle, as fertility is increased whilst on the medications used during the donation process.

Donating eggs might actually be good for your future efforts at starting a family, because it is an opportunity to assess your own reproductive health at no expense. Over all, the donation process allows a woman to take ownership of her reproductive health, learn more about her body and embrace the different decisions we can make about our bodies.

Please look out for our infographic on the egg donation process for more detail on the ins and outs of eggs donation.

Some Things to Reflect on and Remember

1. Always take care of yourself - It’s much easier to deal with the stress of infertility around the holidays if you are well-rested and healthy. Vince Lombardi’s saying “Fatigue makes cowards of us all” is absolutely true. Make sure you get plenty of sleep, drink enough fluids, and maintain a healthy diet during this time.

2. Dont feel guilt - Don’t feel guilty if you need to skip a family event or party, because the priority here is focusing on yourself and partner as you navigate through this difficult time. Spend time doing what you like most, and remind yourself that you are a strong, resilient person who can overcome any obstacles in your path.

3. Plan ahead and research - We often feel better when we’re taking positive action to address whatever is on our minds. Cheering up other victims of the holiday blues can be rejuvenating and uplifting, so try to help others in need. However, if you’ve been trying to conceive or get pregnant for some time and you’re ready to consider next steps with a fertility specialist or through assisted reproductive technology, do not wait until the end of holiday season before you take positive steps. There are many different fertility treatments and options for individuals struggling with infertility and once you begin this process, you may find your outlook on life will improve.
