Silent Steps Silent Steps was initiated eleven years ago to raise funds for the National Institute for the Deaf.

What started as a solo, unsupported 27 day, 570km hike along the Skeleton Coast of Namibia, evolved into a fully fletched hiking business over the past ten years. The initial fundraising activity was a 570km unsupported walk up the Skeleton Coast of Namibia undertaken by Anette Grobler. After the walk Ms Grobler received several requests from people wanting to undertake similar ‘off the beaten track’ adventures. While Silent Steps activities are no longer for the aid of the National Institute for the Deaf, this page has been revived to facilitate these ‘off the beaten track’ hikes and adventures.

The stretch of coast between L'Agulhas and Arniston has swallowed ships for three hundred years.

There is a reason. Two oceans meet on this coastline, and the currents push differently every season. Some sections are safe on a low tide and not on a high one.

On the Tipwreck Trail you walk with people who know this coast. Every day starts with a tide chart and ends with a story about a ship that did not make it. Five days, a small group, cabins each night, luggage carried ahead.

The 2027 trail is open: 3 to 7 June, R10 400 per person sharing, R13 000 single. Same price as this year. We run it once a year.

This was day 1 of our last Nam Hike earlier this year.

Langstrand to Swakopmund. 18km of breathtaking Atlantic coastline.
The endless ocean on our left, towering dunes on our right, and so much to see along the way.

We started at Langstrand and finished at The Reef in Swakopmund with a cold b**r - the perfect first day of our Walvis to Henties hike.

What a way to begin.

From being soaked to the bone on our Boland weekender (Bainskloof) this morning, to hiking in 40°C heat on another trail. From being forced off the West Coast beach after just 7 km three weeks ago because of thunder and lightning, to postponing the Swartberg Pass hike due to floods in June.
What a year of unpredictable weather it has been!
As hikers — and as a hiking company — we learn to adapt. We cannot control Mother Nature, but we can respect her, respond to her and work with her.
Resilience is not about pushing through at all costs. It’s about knowing when to adapt, when to turn back, and when to try again.
And when the sun does shine? We appreciate every single ray! ☀️🥾

This was Saturday morning, the start of the Wilderness Walk hiking trail. Buffelsbaai river crossing.
