Mental Health Matters: On the couch with Linda in May
Identity after Struggle.
We’ve covered grief, loss, loneliness, burnout, foundations, resilience and emotional wellbeing this month. But one thing many riders silently wrestle with is:
“Who am I when I’m not performing well… when I’m injured… when I’m not competing… when life changes?”
Mental health isn’t just about coping.
It’s also about rebuilding identity when life no longer looks the way you expected it to.
Learning to separate your worth from your performance may be one of the most important mental skills you ever develop.
Because you are still valuable on the days you’re struggling.
Still worthy when you’re uncertain.
Still enough when you’re not achieving.
Performance matters.
But the human underneath it matters more.

Mental Skills for Equestrians - Think Better, Ride Better So what exactly does a mental skills coach do?
I work with clients of all ages and riding abilities —using evidence-based mental skills and mindset strategies to help them perform better in whatever equestrian sport they do. Some of the big things I work with them on are calming down or gearing up before a big event, managing anxiety before and during performance, helping them to develop positive self-talk and imagery scenarios, and building m

Al came up lame.
One minute you’re building momentum, making plans, feeling hopeful… and the next, everything changes. Again.
That’s the thing about horses.
About sport.
About life, really.
We want certainty. We want progress to look neat and linear and rewarding. We want the “zero to hero” story.
But sometimes it’s more like:
zero to hero… and back to zero.
And maybe that’s not failure.
Maybe that’s the work.
Learning how to stay grounded when the outcome changes.
Learning how to care deeply without trying to control everything.
Learning how to begin again, over and over, without losing yourself in the disappointment.
So today we pause. We regroup. We look after the horse in front of us.
And then… we start again.
Because resilience isn’t built in the victory lap.
It’s built here. In a dark stable. With non-matchy bandages.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month
In this video, I’m talking about grief, loss, loneliness, and how to begin finding meaning again when life feels empty or uncertain.
Healing is rarely linear. It’s not about “getting over it” — it’s about learning how to carry what has happened while still creating a life that feels purposeful.
If you’re feeling stuck, disconnected, or unsure how to move forward, support can help.

And just like that… Zero to Hero is ON.
Back in the competition arena. Back between the white boards. Back on the journey.
No, it wasn’t a hero performance. Not yet. There’s so much to improve. But today was never about perfection or placings.
Sometimes the biggest win is simply becoming the person who is willing to begin again.
Because achievement isn’t defined by winning. It’s defined by who you become while chasing the goal.
Dressage journey: activated.
Let the work begin.

Perfectionism keeps you chasing an impossible finish line.
Excellence allows you to respect the process, learn from each ride, and keep moving forward.
Your growth is not only measured by results, but by the courage to keep showing up.

Mental skills only work when your mental health is supported.
You can’t perform at your best from empty.
Build your foundation first:
Sleep – top athletes don’t get 8 hours… they get more.
Joy – less scrolling, more living. Find something every day that lifts you.
Nutrition & hydration – fuel and fluids aren’t optional. They’re performance tools.
A tired, depleted rider can’t focus, regulate, or perform.
Train your mind—but support the human first.

Zero to Hero Dressage Challenge Show Prep Loading… planning for a peak performance.
Peak performance is not about full marks or a perfect score sheet. It is about performing to the best of your current level of preparation, skill, and partnership on the day.
Al and I have only been training together for about a month, so there is still plenty to learn, strengthen, and refine. A peak performance for us this Saturday would not be perfection.
It would be more trust. More relaxation. Better connection. A calm ride. A test that reflects where we truly are right now.
That is success. That is progress. And that is how confidence is built.
Peak performance isn’t perfection. It’s the best expression of where we are today. TrainYourMindImproveYourRide ProgressOverPerfection

Less mess, more joy today.
Naming the messy middle changed everything for me this week. Instead of fighting the frustration, I could recognise it for what it is: part of the process.
Today felt softer, lighter, more connected.
Proof that if you ride through the messy middle, you eventually come out the other side.
Next stop: levelling up.
