ASTRON ENERGY MAKES A DIFFERENCE
On Saturday 11 October the Inaugural Astron Energy Mitchell's Plain Junior Development Tournament was held at the Mitchell's Plain Tennis Club in Westridge Gardens.
The tournament was sponsored by Mr Bapoo, retailer at Astron Energy Beacon Valley. The event was held to showcase some of the best young talent drawn from tennis hubs across the Cape Flats. These included Khayelitsha, Mitchell's Plain, Athlone, Bellville, Langa, Gugulethu and Bishop Lavis.
18 Players ranging from ages 10 to 18 were invited to participate in the event. The tournament was also live streamed through Tennis Network with top umpires Peter May and Samira Woodman(tournament referee) jumping in to help make the event a success.
We were also honoured to be graced by greats like Mr Japie Klaasen (father of Raven Klaasen) former SA doubles specialist, and Roxanne Clarke, current SA Billie Jean Cup captain. Clarke volunteered to work at the tournament doing interviews and commentary.
Former Mitchell's Plain #1 and top coach in the southern suburbs, Linden Natus also popped around, as he remains vested in tennis at MPTC.
Aunty Harriet Petterson manned the result desk while Juanita Williamson served as roving umpire making certain that players abided by the tennis rules.
Lyndal Colville chaired the u-18 final Open and closing ceremonies were conducted by MPTC Chairman Razeen Benjamin.
A registered nursing team was in attendance to assist with injuries and medical emergencies.

Happy Birthday, Coach Andrew!!!! ππΌππΌππΌ
Today is all about celebrating youβthe heart π and soul of our tennis club. As we reflect on your birthday, our hearts are filled with a gratitude that is difficult to put into words.
You have given so much of yourself, not out of obligation, but out of a genuine love for the game and for seeing each of us grow. Youβve sacrificed your evenings, your weekends, and your energy, asking for nothing in return.
Weβve watched you tirelessly analyse our individual gameplay, patiently fixing a serve here, refining a backhand there, and always knowing exactly what unique encouragement each of us needed. You saw potential in us even when we couldn't see it in ourselves.
And while the calendar may say you're 58, your boundless energy and youthful spirit are a true inspiration to us all. Frankly, you don't look a day older than 21βwhat's your secret?! π€·π»ββοΈ
Your impact extends far beyond the baseline. Youβve taught us about resilience, sportsmanship, and the quiet confidence that comes from knowing someone believes in you. The lessons learned under your guidance are ones we will carry both on and off the court.
On this special day, we wish you a birthday filled with the same joy and warmth you so selflessly bring to all of us. May your future endeavours be as rewarding and successful as you deserve, because no one deserves happiness more than you. π₯°
Thank you ππ½ for everything, Coach. We are the players we are today because of you.
With all our appreciation and warmest wishes,
Your Grateful Tennis Club

MPTC Teams TOP Final Log
The Mitchell's Plain mixed team has finally done it! After years of near misses the team has navigated it's way successfully through a tough field and will progress to 2nd league in 2026. Topping the leader board for 5 consecutive weeks, even beating the strongest contenders, Meadowridge, along the way, the Cape Flats team spent a short stint in 2nd place with the Southern Suburbs team leading by 1 point, before reclaiming the peak on 8 March.
A decisive 22-0 drubbing of Chrismar sealed a victorious 4-point lead over Meadowridge.
It is worth mentioning the players who made this feat possible: Dylan Kinnes, Adnaan Isaacs, Brett Field, Mahdee Hendricks, Waleed Joubert, George Timmie, Leo Matthysen, Candice Naudt, Shireen Hendricks, Zariya Joubert, June Trout, Rhonda Eaves, Josette Khabanyana and Karen Arendse. Job WELL DONE.
The men's doubles B-team finished the season in joint first position at 54 points with Tornadoes, the only team to beat them this year. A melting pot consisting of a band of social players, a few juniors, led by a few seasoned members, shaken, not stirred, gives you a successful concoction to take the team to the next level.
Thank you George, Amanullah, Mani, Sedick, Lionel, Charles, David, Ismaeel and Aidan.
Unfortunately our Doubles A team, who won only one match this season will drop to 3rd league after a string of misfortunes hit the once formidable formation who at one stage topped this very league, which saw them spend a season in first league. Let's pray those glory days return.
