Most people never get to these reps. They stop when things start to get heavy and uncomfortable.

Which is a pity. Because the last few reps are where the real work happens.

Anyone can move light weights comfortably. But when the burn kicks in - and the reps start to move slowly and demand more attention and focus - those are the ones forcing adaptation.

This is where you push into the zone where muscle will grow (can you see how bulky she is - gross hey?! 🙄)

This isn’t just about building stamina and grinding out ugly reps. This is where the most muscle fibres are recruited.

Where mechanical tension is at its peak and muscles are forced into the adaption you’re training for.

This is quite literally what you’re here for.

And if you’re not pushing to this point - you’re cheating yourself out of the progress you’re chasing.

Doesn’t make sense does it?

When Debbie volunteered at a care home, she witnessed something that cemented just how important strength training had become in her life.

Out of 18 residents, only 2 could walk without assistance.

That statistic stayed with her.

Because this isn’t about six-packs.
It’s not about looking younger.

It’s about maintaining your independence, your mobility, and your quality of life for as long as possible.

Warming up the body is the smart way to prepare for load.

It increases blood flow, opens the hips, wakes up the glutes, and reduces the stress from sitting or previous training sessions before you add load to the body.

The goal is to move with better control and stability from the first rep under the empty bar (yes
 empty bar first).

Give your body the best chance at movement by taking time to effectively warm up.

It’s an investment in time you won’t regret when the loads get increasingly heavier.

Thee are some of my drills I use regularly. Take what you need.

They train hard. They celebrate hard. They love hard. They cry hard.

And this prep was particularly difficult. It was hard on both their bodies and their minds. But never their relationship.

And anyone who has ever witnessed these two compete knows that they do it with their whole heart and soul. They leave everything on that platform for every single lift.

And win or lose they are side by side for it all.

It’s an absolute pleasure and privilege coaching them. I never have to question their loyalty or commitment or effort. If anything I have to soften the blows they give themselves when things don’t go well and be the voice of reason - reminding them that they are only human.

So to see them both walk away with Best Overall Male and Female lifters at AWPC Nationals 2026 was the cherry on top and so well deserved!
