The change room after the match was filled with gutted faces. But not faces of despair.
This team knows who they are and what they have achieved together. They know winning is not a right and that every opponent they face is worthy of being in this league. They approach every match with confidence, but also with respect.
Losing, however, is not something they have become accustomed to. Which makes the disappointment even more real.
They feel the weight of the result. They should.
But outside the change room, members, families and supporters were waiting for them. They were gutted too. But they were also there to celebrate a team that has achieved something remarkable and, without question, become the most successful team in the long history of Villager FC.
Back to back SLA champions. Back to back Presidents Cup winners. Seven consecutive wins against our oldest rivals.
This group has achieved what few expected. And in doing so, they have lived up to the expectations they set for themselves and the standards of a 150 year old club that has endured the Anglo Boer War, two World Wars, a changing South Africa and generations of change.
Andries, his team and those who couldn't take the field because of injury may be hurting today.
But they should also be immensely proud.
We certainly are.
We are grateful to Andy, his coaching staff, the medical team and our incredible warriors who have given us so much to be proud of.
You have made us proud to be Villager FC.
