🏏 Born from Shaykh Abu Bakr Effendi’s legacy: The 144-year story of Cape Town’s Ottoman Cricket Club

When Sheikh Abu Bakr Effendi arrived in Cape Town in 1863, few could have imagined that his educational legacy would help give rise to one of South Africa’s oldest and most enduring sporting institutions.

Less than two decades after the Ottoman scholar established the Ottoman Muslim School, a group of his students carried the values they had learned in the classroom onto the cricket field.

Founded in 1882 by Abdullah Agmat and fellow students of the Ottoman Muslim School, **Ottoman Cricket Club** has grown into far more than a sporting institution. Today it is recognised as:
- The oldest Muslim cricket club in South Africa
- The country’s oldest continuously operating non-racial cricket club
- The third-oldest cricket club in the Western Cape
- One of the oldest cricket clubs in South Africa

Its story is about education, faith, identity, community and survival.

From the classroom to the cricket field
The origins of Ottoman Cricket Club are inseparable from the educational legacy of Sheikh Abu Bakr Effendi. Dispatched to the Cape by the Ottoman Empire in 1862, he established schools, taught Islamic jurisprudence and strengthened religious education among Cape Muslims. Although he passed away in 1880, his students continued his legacy in ways he may never have anticipated.

Two years later they founded the club. In an era when cricket was closely associated with colonial society and largely dominated by white communities, students from an Ottoman-founded Muslim school embraced the game and made it their own — using it as another means of strengthening community and belonging.

Surviving apartheid and forced removals
Many sporting clubs struggle to survive even a few decades. Ottoman has endured for 144 years — a remarkable achievement against the backdrop of apartheid and forced removals.

When the club relocated from Bo-Kaap to Surrey Estate on the Cape Flats, resources were limited. There was no proper clubhouse. Players changed beside their vehicles. Members cut the grass, prepared the grounds and removed thorns by hand so that children could play safely. Their commitment ensured the club survived one of the most turbulent periods in South African history.

More than a cricket club
The history of Ottoman was not written by wealthy sponsors or professional administrators. It was built by volunteers — parents who prepared meals, unpaid coaches, groundsmen who spent countless hours preparing wickets, and former players who returned to mentor the next generation.

The values of the Ottoman Muslim School found another expression on the cricket field: discipline, humility, respect, service and family. Those principles continue to define the club today.

Generations of fathers have introduced their sons to Ottoman. Brothers have played alongside one another. Former teammates have become coaches and administrators, preserving a tradition inherited from those who came before them.

More than 140 years after a group of Muslim students first picked up their bats, Ottoman Cricket Club remains a powerful reminder that enduring institutions are not built only in classrooms or places of worship.

Sometimes, they are built on cricket fields too.

Ottoman Cricket Club is immensely proud to congratulate Meeka-eel Prince on his selection to the South African A squad for the upcoming series against Bangladesh!

This is a particularly special achievement for our club.
Meeka-eel came through the Ottoman junior ranks and went on to play the majority of his senior cricket for the club before earning a franchise opportunity with the North-West Dragons, where he continues to ply his trade.
Today, he takes another important step in his cricketing journey by earning selection to the South African A squad.
For Ottoman Cricket Club, this is more than an individual achievement. It is a proud reflection of the importance of youth development, coaching and providing our young players with a pathway to the highest levels of the game.
We are incredibly proud to have played a part in Meeka-eel’s journey and are delighted for him and his family.
