Starter is committed to uplifting communities through holistic youth development. Humble Beginnings
Starter’s journey began with a local “rebel” soccer game in 1996 informal, spirited, and deeply rooted in community. What started as play quickly became more: a safe, supportive space where young people could grow, learn, and belong. This grassroots approach laid the foundation for a programme that listened to local needs and responded with practical opportunities for youth development. Growth into a Foundation
As community needs expanded, Starter Soccer Club evolved into Starter Soccer & Netball Club, and ultimately into Starter Academy Sport and Education Foundation. In 2012, Starter formally registered as a community-based entity, affirming its long-term commitment to structured programmes and partnerships. This transformation reflects Starter’s ability to adapt while staying true to its mission of empowering communities. Key Programmes and Partnerships
• Mitchell’s Plain Rugby Academy Programme: A dedicated initiative combining sport and education to help young people excel both on the field and in the classroom.
• Collaborations with Maties Rugby Club: Partnerships such as the Maties Mitchell’s Plain Academy and the Maties Rugby Academy (Stellenbosch University) extend opportunities for youth through established university sport structures. These collaborations highlight Starter’s role as a bridge-builder, connecting local talent with broader platforms. Today and Beyond
Starter Academy’s flagship initiative, TOCS (Taking Our Community Seriously), embodies its mission to use sport, culture, and education as catalysts for community upliftment. While honouring its sporting roots,
Starter now embraces a broader purpose:
empowering young people academically, socially, and emotionally so they can thrive in life both on and off the field.

What an incredible journey and what an unforgettable celebration!

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to every player, coach, official, parent, sponsor, volunteer, supporter, and community member who made “The Best of Mitchell’s Plain” Festival a huge success. This was not just an event it was a statement of unity, pride, talent, and community spirit as we begin celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Mitchell’s Plain.

A few years ago, this vision started with only two Hotspurs Ladies teams playing against each other. From those humble beginnings to what we witnessed today a multi-sport discipline festival filled with energy, excellence, and massive community support we are truly grateful for how far we have come.

Special appreciation goes to Hotspurs Ladies for pioneering this initiative and laying the foundation for what has now grown into something powerful and inspiring. Your commitment and belief in the vision will always be remembered.

Congratulations on being the worthy first recipients of “The Best of Mitchell’s” Shield we salute you for your dedication, performance, and leadership.

This was only the first of many celebrations to come this year. The journey continues, and together we will keep building platforms that create opportunities and showcase the very best of our community.
