The Dantian is an evolving concept both historically and in our own practice.
Historically it started out as a concept about accumulation of Yang within Yin (Laozi Ming: "a great purple room") and did not have a fixed location, then Ge Hong defined three different locations in the body. Daoists gradually developed the idea in the contexts of visualization, breathing and Daoyin until eventually internal alchemy came into being. In the context of internal alchemy the Dantian also gradually developed from a physical location of energy generation to an interface between pre and post heaven which is not absolutely fixed in location or number (see Liu Yiming 's concept of Jing, Qi and Shen merging as one). Qigong practioners understand the Dantian in various ways depending on where they derive their influences, but the key point is that it is a place to develop and store Qi so it can be circulated within the body, or even outside. Martial artists understand the Dantian is an area of power generation and the center of balance (generally).
In our own practice the idea of Dantian will evolve too. It is most likely that we will start out with a physical impression of the three Dantian as more or less fixed, then gradually move toward a more general, energetic understanding. Maybe later if we are lucky we will also understand the relationship between Dantian and emptiness which is actually its original nature, but this will require time, effort and guidance over many years.

"Yogic and Ta***ic teachings say that the combination of physical exercises (Kriya/Asana), breathing techniques (Pranayama), energetic locks (Bandha) and Mantra chanting can be used to cause Prana and Apana to meet at Hara Chakra and stir the Kundalini into activity. To raise the Kundalini energy through Sushumna, and Prana (Pingala) and Apana (Ida) along the spine, one can apply hydraulic locks (Bandhas), which require the conscious application of pressure in different parts of the body. Applying pressure in Muladhara Chakra (Mula Bandha) sends the Kundalini and Prana and Apana energies up to Swadhisthana Chakra. Next, one needs to apply a Bandha in the diaphragm (Uddiyana Bandha), which will send the three energies upwards to the Throat Chakra. From there, the Neck Lock (Jalandhara Bandha) takes the energies into the brain. Applying all three locks simultaneously is called Maha Bandha. The Pineal Gland is connected to the Ida Nadi, while the Pituitary Gland is connected to Pingala. As the Kundalini is rising, the Pineal Gland begins to transmit a beam of radiation and project it towards the Pituitary Gland. The Pituitary thus becomes aroused and projects pulses or flashes of Light towards the Pineal Gland. Once the Kundalini enters the brain through Sushumna, Ida and Pingala cross each other one final time at the Thalamus, where they fuse as opposites. This process awakens Ajna Chakra, activating it entirely, which results in a mystic marriage between the Pineal and Pituitary Glands. As Ida, Pingala and Sushumna unify as one stream of energy in the Thalamus centre, the gate to Sahasrara becomes open. The Kundalini can then rise to the top of the head and complete its journey. The Soul, which had its seat at the Pineal Gland, leaves the physical body, and an expansion of consciousness occurs." -Excerpt from "Serpent Rising" by Neven Paar

“Sinking” refers to qi sinking to the dantian; “rising” refers to spirit lifting to the
crown point.

Sinking makes the body heavy and stable; rising makes it light and agile.

The combination of sinking and rising produces central equilibrium.

If one sinks without rising, the spirit becomes dull; if one rises without sinking, the
qi becomes empty.

Thus it is said: When sinking and rising are balanced, both form and spirit are
complete.

☯️ Zhan Zhuang - Standing Qi Gong for Health and Martial Arts ☯️

Zhan Zhuang is a Chinese practice of standing still in various pos-tures to build internal strength, body awareness, and health for both martial arts and general well-being. For health, it improves circula-tion, reduces stress, and helps identify physical blockages. For martial arts, it develops a connected, full-body power and structure, improv-ing balance, alignment, and efficient movement. The practice involves holding static poses for extended periods, initially starting with 10-20 minutes and gradually increasing the time to 30 minutes or more.

* Health benefits
Improves circulation: Enhances blood flow and energy circulation (Qi) throughout the body.
Increases muscle strength and endurance: Strengthens legs, core, tendons, and connective tissues without high impact.
Reduces stress: Helps to manage stress and improve overall vitality.
Promotes relaxation: Aids in identifying and dissolving physical and energetic blockages.
Potential therapeutic effects: Studies indicate it can enhance cardiovascular function and may help with conditions like neurasthenia, arthritis, and cardiovascular diseases due to improved oxygen delivery from increased hemoglobin.

* Martial arts benefits
Develops structure: Builds a strong foundation and alignment for full-body connected power.
Increases power and efficiency: Teaches practitioners to move with minimal effort, creating powerful movements,
Improves movement awareness: Enhances body awareness, enabling better biomechanics and reducing wasted energy.
Builds resilience: Strengthens legs, core, and connective tissues, creating a resilient and stable base.
Refines control: Cultivates ultimate body control and a mind-muscle connection.

* How to practice
1. Find a suitable location: Stand on an even surface with your feet hip-width apart, parallel or slightly open.

2. Adopt the posture:
Keep knees slightly bent, but not past the toes.
Hips are slightly back, with the tailbone drawn down.
Stomach is relaxed, with the navel slightly lifted.
Hold arms as if holding a large, soft ball or a steamed bun under each armpit, with elbows relaxed and dropping slightly.
Your hands should be slightly rounded, about 10-20 cm apart, roughly at the level of your navel or lower.
Tuck your chin slightly, projecting the crown of your head upwards.
Keep your chest soft and empty.

3. Maintain focus:
Distribute your weight evenly through the balls of your feet.
Breathe naturally and focus on feeling the Qi flow.
Maintain a soft gaze forward and a joyful state of mind.

4. Start and increase duration: Begin with shorter periods, like 5-10 minutes, and gradually increase to 15 or more as you become more comfortable.

5. Make adjustments: Allow for subtle adjustments as you find your balance, and be aware of any tension or weaknesses that arise, using the practice to find relaxation and correct imbalances.

Additional:
Chest and Back: The chest should not be inflated, but should be relaxed and drawn inward
so that air circulates freely and qi descends into the lower dantian. As you release the chest, fill the belly. The back should be open and extended. Relaxing the shoulder blades, letting them drop to their lowest point, will allow the chest to lower. Rounding the shoulder blades (pushing them outward and forward) will open and extend the back.

Shoulders: Shoulders should be relaxed and able to drop and swing forward.

Most workouts focus on muscles.
Qigong works where it truly matters—your organs, fascia, and nervous system—for deep, holistic wellness.

It’s not about doing more. It’s about moving with purpose and restoring balance in your entire body.

The 5 Element Qigong practice, like the Leopard Qigong, targets what typical fitness routines miss, helping you restore energy, flexibility, and strength.

Here’s what Leopard Qigong targets to help you feel your best:

Fascia:
Leopard Qigong improves fascia elasticity, releasing tension in your lateral lines, spiral lines, and back, especially in areas where most people hold chronic stiffness. This not only improves mobility but also supports muscle recovery for more fluid movement throughout your day.

Muscles:
Unlike conventional workouts that isolate muscles, Leopard Qigong enhances whole-body coordination. It strengthens and lengthens key muscle groups like your core, quads, hamstrings, and upper back, promoting better posture, strength, and flexibility.

Organs:
Leopard Qigong isn’t just about muscles—it stimulates your liver, spleen, and kidneys, improving detoxification and energy flow. This helps to boost vitality and restore balance from the inside out.

Joints:
While most workouts stress your joints, Leopard Qigong promotes joint mobility in your hips, knees, shoulders, and ankles—helping you feel more fluid and less stiff, especially after long hours of sitting or standing.

Emotional Health:
Leopard Qigong helps release anger, frustration, and stress, calming the nervous system and fostering emotional clarity. This practice is not only about physical fitness but also about mental and emotional balance.

The secret?
Qigong is intelligent movement. It’s not about pushing harder—it’s about moving smarter. Restoring balance inside your body, while strengthening it outside.

Swimming in cold water regularly—like once a week—can lead to changes on a cellular and physiological level.

Cold exposure stimulates mitochondrial biogenesis, meaning your cells may actually produce more mitochondria, which are the "powerhouses" of the cell.

More mitochondria = more energy and better endurance.

Cold water triggers an anti-inflammatory response.

Over time, this can reduce chronic inflammation in your body, which is linked to numerous diseases and aging.

Cold exposure activates brown adipose tissue (BAT), which helps generate heat and burn calories.

Over time, this can improve metabolic health and insulin sensitivity.

Cold water is a form of “hormetic stress”—short-term stress that strengthens the body. It can increase norepinephrine, dopamine, and endorphins, improving mood and mental clarity.

Regular cold exposure may boost the immune response by increasing white blood cell count and activity, helping your body fight illness more effectively.
