For more than 33 years, the Gene Louw Traffic College has been a valued partner to the roadworthy industry in the Cape, shaping the future of road safety in this province. Guided by the strong values of the college, the commitment of the Facilitators in supporting Trainee Examiners has been remarkable. We thank Gene Louw for their continued service to the roadworthy industry, among all its other services to different traffic safety professionals.

In October 1992, three of the AVTS participants successfully completed their Examiner of Vehicles training, which lay the foundation of our establishment in the early years. Gene Louw’s legacy continues in providing EOV trainees with the best possible grounding for their careers in vehicle testing and compliance.

Today, we were honoured with a visit from the current cohort of trainees at our branch, AVTS Table View, hosted by our Manager, Brigette Rich.

Heading off with a Trailer or Caravan?

Many light vehicles are fitted with tow bars, but before hitching up, keep these 2 critical points in mind.

Firstly, know your vehicle's GCM (Gross Combination Mass).

Your vehicle's manufacturer specifies a GCM which is the maximum combined weight of:-
- The towing vehicle
- The trailer or caravan
- All cargo
- Fuel and passengers
Exceeding this limit is illegal and dangerous, even if the vehicle feels capable of towing the load.

Secondly, a Code B licence only allows towing of a trailer with a GVM not exceeding 750kg. To tow a trailer or caravan over 750kg, the driver needs an EB or higher licence.
