UCT TV UCT TV is part of the Centre for Film and Media Studies at University of Cape Town. The Studio is built to BBC Specialisations.

It’s a BBC specification studio used for student and university productions. In addition we also provide full student crews to film training/educational videos, promotional documentaries, talks, seminars, conferences and events. These crews include directors, producers, camera operators, sound recordists and editors. UCT TV also offers gear for UCT student productions and post-production facilities. Free One-Week Screenwriting Course!

Next month, UCT TV studios is hosting, not one, but two filmmaking courses. In addition to the Stepping Stone Course at the end of the month, our studio in collaboration with Spanish Embassy of South Africa, is hosting an award-winning screenwriter, Rocio Mesa, for this limited time screen writing course.

In this course, she takes you through the plot, characters, and scene setting exercises to help you develop your story, further. Together, you can take your idea and develop it further in a safe and interactive space. Limited to just 10 participants, all are welcome to apply whether or not you've experienced a film course before. Late career entrants are also welcome to apply.

Spotted at Durban FilmMart ✨️

UCT TV Producer, Marion Seymour, and CFMS alumni Nomandla Vilakazi and Ara Bhaba spotted at the 17th edition of the Durban Film Mart.

Nomandla was there promoting her MODA film spin off projects and Ara now represents the Joburg Film Festival.

Take a step in the right direction!

Are you a ‘lone filmmaker’ OR aspiring crew member but don’t know how to operate a camera, sound equipment and editing software? Securing a commission or support for an independent documentary (or fiction) film is highly competitive. Most funders want to see a proof of concept. This often means you have to find a way to shoot & edit a production trailer with zero money or crew. Or maybe you want to take the first steps to learn practical production skills required to work freelance in film or television production.

Then you should apply for the 1-WEEK INTENSIVE Stepping Stone Practical Filmmaking Bootcamp hosted by the Centre for Film and Media Studies at the University of Cape Town. You will be guided through the foundations of camerawork, location sound recording and editing.

Only a limited number of applicants can be accepted, so hurry and get your application in! Preference will be given to applicants who want to produce documentary films. Fiction filmmakers will also be considered.

Presented by industry experts, you will be introduced to the basics of:

How a digital camera works and how to operate it
Location sound recording
Three-point-lighting and using a reflector
Tips for shooting on location
The basics of Da Vinci Resolve editing software

We will be hosting future bootcamps and courses throughout the year, so keep an eye on our socials for other course topics!

Dates: 23 – 27 November 2026 (9AM to 4PM everyday)

Before applying, make sure that you are available for ALL DAYS of the course. This is not an online course, in-person participation is a requirement.

Cost: FREE to eligible applicants

Requirements:
Between 18 and 35
Demonstrable experience or very strong interest in filmmaking
A written concept/treatment/screenplay for a documentary (or fiction) project
Strong work ethic and commitment
Available full day, every day
