You ever watch your kid compete the same routine…
Same skills.
No falls.
Looks solid.
Meet #1: 9.2
Meet #2: 8.6
And you’re thinking…
“Wait. What?? It looked the SAME.”
Let’s talk about it.
Routines can look identical to the untrained eye — but gymnastics isn’t judged on skills completed. It’s judged on details.
• Were the legs glued together the entire time?
• Were the toes pointed every second?
• Did the handstand actually hit vertical — or was it 10° short?
• Was the leap really 180°… or 165°?
• Did the landing absorb smoothly… or shift the heels?
Tiny things.
Blink-and-you-miss-it things.
But they add up.
And here’s the other truth no one likes to say out loud:
Judges are human.
Different panels.
Different angles.
Different interpretations within the same rule book.
One judge might take .05.
Another might take .10.
Multiply that across 8–12 skills… and now you’ve got a completely different score.
The routine didn’t change much.
The evaluation did.
And that’s why we don’t chase scores in this gym.
We chase:
✔️ cleaner shapes
✔️ tighter form
✔️ stronger landings
✔️ confidence under pressure
Because if you focus on the scoreboard, you’ll go crazy.
If you focus on mastery, the numbers take care of themselves.
Parents — this is your reminder:
A lower score doesn’t always mean a worse routine.
A higher score doesn’t always mean perfection.
Progress isn’t always reflected perfectly in numbers.
Sometimes growth is happening in places the score sheet doesn’t show.
And that’s the stuff that actually lasts.
