IPSC NATIONAL MATCH PREPARATION
How to arrive at Nationals ready to perform
A national IPSC match is won long before the first “Standby.”
Good preparation reduces stress, prevents avoidable equipment problems and allows you to concentrate on what matters most when the timer starts: executing your plan.
1. 4–6 WEEKS BEFORE NATIONALS
• Set a clear goal. Focus on performance, not just your final placing.
• Identify the skills that cost you points — movement, transitions, reloads, accuracy, difficult targets and shooting on the move.
• Train those weaknesses instead of simply shooting more rounds.
• Shoot complete stages under match-like conditions.
• Practise your stage-planning process until it becomes automatic.
• Include pressure in your training — timer, movement and limited preparation time.
• Work on fitness, mobility, balance and stability.
• Remember: Consistency > intensity.
2. 1–2 WEEKS BEFORE NATIONALS
This is NOT the time for major changes.
• Don't suddenly change your pistol setup.
• Don't introduce untested ammunition.
• Check your pistol for wear and reliability.
• Inspect magazines, springs, followers and base pads.
• Check your holster, magazine pouches and belt.
• Inspect screws, fasteners and other equipment.
• Make sure your eye and hearing protection is ready.
• Test everything you intend to use at Nationals.
• Reduce unnecessary training volume.
Your goal now is simple:
Arrive fresh, confident and reliable — not tired.
3. EQUIPMENT CHECKLIST
• Competition pistol
• Reliable magazines plus spare magazines
• Spare parts appropriate for your firearm.
Spare optic !
• Magazine loader/unloader
• Holster
• Magazine pouches
• Competition belt
• Eye protection plus a spare pair
• Hearing protection plus spare batteries
• Basic tools and Allen keys
• Cleaning and lubrication equipment
• Spare batteries for optics, timers and electronics
• Chamber flag if required
• Water bottle
• Food and snacks
• Match information and schedule
• Any required documents
Remember:
The best equipment in the world is useless if you leave it at home.
4. THE WEEK OF THE MATCH
• Prioritise sleep.
• Keep your sleep schedule consistent.
• Stay properly hydrated.
• Eat familiar foods.
• Don't experiment with new diets or supplements.
• Keep caffeine intake normal.
• Do light exercise and mobility work.
• Avoid exhausting gym sessions.
• Avoid excessive dry-fire or live-fire training.
• Visualise clean stage ex*****on.
• Mentally rehearse your draw, transitions, reloads, movement and finish.
Don't try to become a better shooter during match week.
Become a better-rested shooter.
5. STAGE PLANNING
Stage planning can win or lose a match before you fire the first shot.
• Read the stage briefing carefully.
• Understand the start position and procedure.
• Identify every target.
• Identify every No-Shoot.
• Identify penalty targets.
• Identify mandatory reloads.
• Identify all shooting areas.
• Walk the stage before deciding on your final plan.
• Break the stage into sections.
• Identify your key points: first shot, transitions, movement, reloads and final position.
• Know where you will enter and exit each position.
• Have a simple backup plan.
NB ! Know when to shoot fast and when to slow down .
Most importantly:
Choose the fastest plan YOU can execute reliably.
6. DON'T COPY OTHER SHOOTERS
A common mistake at Nationals is watching a top shooter and immediately deciding:( If their game plan is beter you can change but not at the last minute)
“That’s how I should shoot it.”
Remember:
• Their equipment may be different.
• Their skill level may be different.
• Their movement ability may be different.
• Their risk tolerance may be different.
• Their strategy may suit them — but not you.
Build YOUR plan.
A simple plan executed perfectly is better than a complicated plan executed badly.
7. MATCH-DAY ROUTINE
• Arrive early.
• Give yourself enough time to park, register and prepare without rushing.
• Eat a familiar breakfast.
• Hydrate.
• Check the day's schedule.
• Know your squad.
• Inspect your equipment.
• Listen carefully to the stage briefing.
• Walk the stage.
• Visualise your plan.
• Before shooting, settle your breathing.
• Focus on the first action.
Don't arrive at the start line already stressed.
Preparation should remove stress — not create it.
8. THE MENTAL GAME
Your biggest opponent is often not the shooter next to you.
It's your own mind.
• Don't think about your overall score while shooting.
• Don't think about where you are on the leaderboard.
• Don't worry about what the shooter before you just shot.
• Focus on your process.
A simple mental cue could be:
GRIP — SEE — MOVE — EXECUTE
If you make a mistake:
• Accept it.
• Forget it.
• Move on.
• Do not allow one mistake to become two.
One bad stage does NOT end a Nationals.
There are still points available.
It's never over until it's over.
9. BETWEEN STAGES
• Drink water.
• Eat small, familiar snacks.
• Check your magazines.
• Check your equipment.
• Rest.
• Protect your eyes.
• Review the next stage early.
• Don't over analys your previous score.
• Keep your conversations positive.
Your match is a marathon, not one stage.
10. WHAT NOT TO DO
• Don't change your gun setup at the last minute.
• Don't use untested ammunition.
• Don't stay up late the night before.
• Don't overtrain during match week.
• Don't chase another shooter's time.
• Don't shoot faster than your ability allows.
• Don't let one bad stage ruin your mindset.
• Don't forget to eat.
• Don't forget to drink.
• Don't spend the entire match worrying about your final position.
11. THE NATIONALS MINDSET
Remember:
Preparation creates confidence.
• Consistency beats occasional brilliance.
• Accuracy and control come before unnecessary speed.
• A simple plan is better than a complicated plan.
• Trust the training you've done.
• Trust your equipment.
• Trust your stage plan.
• Shoot one stage at a time.
• Shoot one position at a time.
• Shoot one shot at a time.
Target high hit factor stages !
Your job is to execute the stage in front of you to the best of your ability.
If you do that consistently, the result will take care of itself.
FINAL NATIONALS CHECK
• Is my firearm reliable?
• Is my ammunition tested?
• Have I checked my magazines?
• Do I have my spare parts?
• Do I have my tools?
• Do I have eye and hearing protection?
• Do I have spare batteries?
• Do I have my match information?
• Is my travel and accommodation organised?
• Do I have food and water planned?
• Have I practised my stage-planning process?
• Have I prioritised sleep and recovery?
• Do I know my match goal?
• Am I mentally ready to focus on process over score?
FINAL THOUGHT
You cannot control what the other competitors shoot.
You cannot control the weather.
You cannot control whether someone shoots an incredible time.
But you CAN control:
Your preparation.
Your equipment.
Your stage plan.
Your attitude.
Your ex*****on.
Go to Nationals prepared.
Stay calm.
Trust your training.
And remember — it's never over until it's over.
