1. Truth – Sincerity, Epistemology, Authenticity. These things define SBG, and explain why we do what we do, in the manner in which we do it.
2. Aliveness – Timing, Energy and Motion. Three sides of the same object, three perspectives of the same phenomena, but each part, essential to the whole. Aliveness is the epistemology of functional martial arts. It is the self-correcting mechanism that allows us to adjust our form to align with function. It is SBG’s truth seeking method. One of the methods used to understand the epistemology of Aliveness is the I-Method (a three-stage training sequence used for most skills and drills); Introduction / Isolation / Integration.
3. Adaptability – Universal, Repeatable, Efficient. Truth has it relates to fighting – Stand Up (striking), Clinch (takedowns), Ground (grappling) and Weapons (impact, edged and ballistic). To accommodate different goals and venues; SBG focuses on fundamentals. Key ways to identify a fundamental: Universal – it will transcend culture, bodies, era and venue. Repeatable – it works on all body types, it doesn’t rely on youth, speed, or strength. Efficient – it provides maximum benefit with minimum effort. Maximum leverage with minimum energy. Maximum control with minimum risks. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu – Standing and ground-based functional martial art that applies technical fundamentals of posture, pressure, connection and weight distribution to immobilize opponents through the correct use of inside space control, leverage and submissions. Learn to defend against strikes and efficiently take your opponent to the ground to submission or learn to subdue opponents in a standing position. Brazilian jiu-jitsu is also about efficient position, leverage application, movement expression, physical problem solving, and metabolic conditioning. Brazilian jiu-jitsu at SBG focuses on the four pillars of the art: Gi, No-Gi, MMA and self-defence. The intelligent martial art for a lifetime of enjoyable training! SBG Cape Town is one of the founding members of the Jiu-Jitsu and Grappling Association of South Africa, this allows our students to enter internationally recognized competitions (ADCC & AJP) and furthermore gives our students opportunity to be recognized with provincial and national colours. SBG Combatives – Fundamental self-defence training run concurrently in most classes, utilizing efficient application of jiu-jitsu, through training in awareness skills, distance management, strike defence, clinch with inside space control, leading to opponent immobilization. This is further expanded in advanced classes to incorporate the STAB and SMAC self-defence programs of SBG International. SBG Fitness - MoveFit
Personal / Group Fitness training; each session focuses on correct movement patterns and Animal flow ground movement for total body articulation. Equipment usage includes Kettlebells (for strength work), Agility apparatus ( and other proprioception and balance equipment), TRX and Gymnastic Rings, and HIIT training stations. MMA Fighters Class – Once students have progressed through the Jiu-jitsu and Combatives programs and show promise and desire, they are invited to join the MMA Class. This class blends the efficient and proven delivery systems of MMA Striking (Boxing & Muay Thai), Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and utilizes SBG International fundamental coaching principles.
