My club of the week: Metropolitan Golf Club

Steeped in history, the Metropolitan Golf Club, or The Met as it’s affectionately known by members and visitors, was originally established in 1895 as The Green and Sea Point Golf Club. Over the years, it has evolved into one of Cape Town’s most beloved golfing gems, offering a unique blend of history and modern course design.

Relocated to its current site in 1906, The Met remained a nine-hole course for much of its existence, until it was closed in 2006 to make way for the construction of the iconic Cape Town Stadium. Exactly 100 years after its relocation, a new 18-hole layout was commissioned and designed by local golf course architect Mark Müller. Today, the course features 14 world-class bent grass greens and 9 fairways, with alternate tees creating 18 distinct holes, ensuring every round offers something new.

The course stretches over 5,699 metres and covers 55 acres, a relatively compact but challenging design. With its kikuyu grass fairways and bent grass greens, The Met’s layout delivers immaculate playing conditions year-round. Two par fives—the 3rd and 12th—offer birdie opportunities, while the round finishes with a spectacular par three over water, leading up to the clubhouse. This final hole provides a breathtaking challenge, perfect for a memorable conclusion to your game.

The clubhouse, dating back to the 1950s, has been preserved and modernised, offering a warm and welcoming space for players to unwind. Whether you're grabbing a bite at the Halfway House or sharing stories at the bar, you’ll feel right at home in the heart of Cape Town. The club also boasts a fully-stocked Golf Shop and a vibrant functions and conferencing facility.

Whether you're here for a round or just to enjoy the stunning views of Table Mountain and Cape Town Stadium, The Metropolitan Golf Club offers a golfing experience like no other.
