On 27 April 2026, SABHSSA successfully hosted its first online webinar, bringing together members and non-members for an engaging and insightful discussion on hunting rifles suited for both plains game and dangerous game in South Africa.
A sincere thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to the conversation.
The session was led by Sonwabo Nothole (Treasurer), a highly regarded firearm enthusiast and subject matter expert.
He shared valuable, practical knowledge on calibre selection, bullet construction, rifle fit, essential accessories, and the importance of ethical shot placement within real South African hunting conditions.
SABHSSA remains committed to creating platforms that encourage informed, responsible, and ethical hunting practices through professional dialogue and shared expertise.

In South Africa, wildlife skins donโt go to waste.
They become everyday products like bags, wallets, belts, shoes, and even notebook covers - supporting jobs from rural communities to skilled artisans.
This value chain helps fund conservation efforts, sustain private and communal land, and preserve cultural traditions that rely on legally sourced materials.
When used responsibly, every part of the animal has purpose.

Every seasoned hunter remembers their first animal.
For thousands of domestic & international hunters, the first animal was an impala. Itโs not by accident.
The Aepyceros melampus with its striking lyre-shaped horns and rust-red coat, has earned its reputation as the perfect entry-level species for new hunters.
Impalas are the most numerous antelope in the bushveld. According to the latest wildlife census data, populations remain healthy and stable across private and state owned land.
For a first-time hunter, abundance translates to opportunity. You spend less time driving and more time learning the fundamentals: glassing, stalking, reading spoor, and playing the wind. A hunt with consistent encounters builds experience faster than a week of waiting for one rare animal.
Donโt mistake โcommonโ for โeasy.โ
Impala are notoriously alert. A herdโs sentries will sound a sharp alarm bark at the first sign of danger, sending the whole group bounding away in spectacular 3 meter leaps. Successfully taking an impala ram demands patience, cover use, and discipline.
In short, it teaches you how to hunt. Master the impala, and you have mastered the basics required for kudu, nyala and beyond.
Hunting is a skills-based pursuit, and skills require practice.
Impala provide that practice at an accessible price point. Lower trophy fees mean a new hunter can focus on shot placement and ethics without the financial pressure.
This reduces โbuck feverโ and promotes calm, calculated shot decisions which is the foundation of ethical hunting.
Conservation through sustainable use only works when the loop is closed. Impala venison is exceptional: lean, fine-grained, and mild in flavour. It makes superb biltong, droรซwors, and steak. For many families, an impala in the freezer is what turns hunting from โsportโ into โprovision.โ
A first-time hunter who provides quality meat builds pride and family support for the lifestyle.
The future of sustainable hunting depends on safe, successful, ethical entry points. An impala hunt delivers all three. It builds confidence, teaches respect for the animal, and instills the discipline required to be a custodian of wildlife.
The impala may wear the crown as the โMcDonaldโs of the bush,โ but no hunter outgrows the respect it demands.
Start with impala.
Hunt it well.
The rest will follow.
